No, they are not. [Mostly.] My fellow Arbitration Officer takes a... slightly liberal view of the 'arbitration' component of our job requirements, however, and is blessed with an overabundance of firearms but not an overabundance of patience. I recommend coming to me with any interpersonal issues, for expediency's sake.

Are you new to the Moira? It's been a tad difficult to keep up, but welcome, if so.

I think what is meant to be a cautionary tale has gotten a little out of control.

I don't think we have a choice but to get involved in places we land. For good or bad, we're there. We fuck it up or we make it better, no matter what we do. So... I know I worry I fuck up everything whether I'm trying to do bad or good, but I know what I do doesn't reflect people that are smarter and better at dealing with things than me. They can change things so that they're less of a mess.

In my opinion. If the better people want to do something. Let them.

We saved a lot of kids on Emiri. I am upset still by Cadacus Primary [lord help him, he still has trouble making the syllables of those words work right], and I will probably never be okay with it, but think of how many people a lot of us have killed on purpose. That one is an accident born of a stupid mistake. One that we made just by not leaving when we are told. If we had not stuck around there, then there would be one less ship worth of survivors from that world.

Things are more complicated than people are led to believe.

We're doing the best we can, or a lot of us are. I think--I have to believe that's admirable, even if the outcome isn't always exactly what we want. We can't know what will happen if we don't try at all, whether it will be 'better' or 'worse,' and making ourselves crazy trying to figure it out doesn't help anybody.

My fellow Arbitration Officer, Crewmember Aurelia Hammerlock, does not necessarily share my even temperament. She also happens to own about four times as many firearms as I do.

That, unfortunately, is not my department. Not that I don't care, but it's well beyond the scope of my duties and influence as an Arbitration Officer. I'm assisting our Probation Officer as much as I'm able, but I'm more than aware the penal system on this ship needs... some work. [To put it mildly.]

For limited values of 'senior,' unfortunately--I've been on the Moira since the very first batch of... guests from the Ingress, about seven months. That extremely dubious honor is what makes me senior officer, not any sort of ability to control her behavior. I am... exploring other avenues of leverage in that department, on my own time.

Not as such--I've just been trapped here longer, which is a dubious honor at best. No one here knows who I am, at home--I'm just Greg, the Arbitration Officer. Miles and I--Miles is in ImpSec now--discussed it and decided it was best if we kept my identity as quiet as possible. Nobody seems to have even heard of Barrayar, here, but that doesn't mean they won't attempt to do harm to an Emperor just because he holds the title, and I don't have the resources here to keep myself or any member of my family safe.

Usually arbitration involves contacting the two parties involved individually, then sitting them down together with a mediator to talk to each other. [Like a couple of god damn adults who don't use firearms to solve their problems, Gregor charitably does not add.] If the people involved can't come to an accord after that, measures to keep them separated to their mutual satisfaction are implemented. We haven't had to do a lot of it on this ship, yet, but that's the ideal. We don't necessarily get to pick our crewmembers, but we have a limited amount of space on this ship, and we all have to share it.
