I'd like to speak with anyone who's interested in coordinating a structured response to the recent disappearances. If we pool our resources in terms of anything technical that needs to be done, and in terms of things like creating small teams and scheduling the usage of rescue vehicles, things will probably run more smoothly. Retrieving as many people as possible is of paramount importance.

Those of you who have experience in search and rescue, on-the-ground stealth, investigation, intelligence work, and programming and electronics would probably be the most useful… but if that doesn't include you, and you're interested, there should certainly still be a way for you to help. I realize that many of you probably already have ideas about how to proceed, but it couldn't hurt to discuss them so that we don't interfere with each other.

To begin with: if you're able to make contact with anyone who's missing, see if they can capture and send some images of their general surroundings -- but only if they can do so without being seen and can preferably send the results privately. Having that kind of information ahead of time could be overwhelmingly valuable.

Let's do whatever we can.

I can start working on a tracking program to help find the people who went missing, but without any sort of mapping data, it’s going to be pretty rudimentary. The best I could do is a program that can show the relative position of a missing person’s MID in relation to the user, but they’d have to be in range for it to work.

I could do a lot more with even basic maps of these places.

It sounds like coming and going from there shouldn't draw too much attention. What if someone flew in close enough to get some kind of aerial map?

That could work. If we have multiple pilots to spare, the more we can get out mapping the area, the better. [Time's of the essence; if this place is as bad as the captains say, they need to work quickly.] Especially if we’re dealing with more than one planet.

Aside from their vulnerability, that's another reason why it would be better to accomplish this as soon as possible. If this is a way station, and some of the people who have been lost are enslaved, it's hard to say how long we have to help any of them. If someone is especially unlucky, they could be taken away in a matter of hours or days.

How long would it take you to work on the preliminary aspects of your program? Everything up to the maps.

[L’s words are sobering; Alan knew they didn’t have much time, but if they could lose people for good in a matter of hours... He thinks it over, trying to come up with ways to expedite the process. Obviously they wouldn’t have time for a testing period. Better to get the program to people as soon as possible and patch out observed issues from there. And there’s the matter of making a program that would only route to the MIDs of those missing rather than sending their rescuers after each other...]

I need a list of everyone who’s gone missing. Once I have that, I’ll try and get it done as soon as possible. [He considers what exactly "as soon as possible" means. it’s not like he’ll be starting from scratch. The MIDs already come with basic tracking and routing programs for crewmembers on the ship. He’ll just need to integrate them into something that can track crewmember locations relative to the MIDs themselves.] A day, at most. [It's a chancy estimate, but he plans to hold himself to it all the same.]

The easiest way to do that would probably simply be to compare the MID roster against whose signals show them as being on board. I can do that, or I can get someone to help me, unless you already have someone in mind.

I can also help you with any necessary debugging. A day is still better than three, which is better than a week.
