Good morning, everyone. For those of you who I haven't met yet, my name is Elizabeth DeWitt, head librarian. Recently, I was promoted by our captains to the position of First Mate, meaning I have taken on additional responsibilities to the crew aside from encouraging everyone to visit the library and make use of the collection. [Little plug there, forgive her.]

As First Mate, I'll be acting as a liaison between the crew and the captains, should anyone have an issue they would feel more comfortable speaking to me about, or if the captains are off ship. Once I've moved in, my quarters will be located in Section M and I encourage anyone to find me there or at the library if you need me.

...I realize not all of us are happy to find ourselves here, however I am one of the potentially few who very easily call this ship my home. Whatever can be done to make things more efficient, safe, or comfortable, I want to discuss it. But, at the same time, if you just want a reading recommendation and some hot chocolate, I can provide that as well.

[She nods, clearly satisfied with the message and smiles, looking a little relieved that she got through the spiel without embarrassing herself.] I think that about wraps it up, but if there's anything else please feel free to message me. Thank you!

I'm so glad to hear that it's been helpful to you. I've always hoped that it would be a place people could find some familiarity in, or at least a quiet place to spend as much time as you want in. I don't mind at all. It's there to be used.

[She has... suspicions that she knows who she's talking to, but she's not one-hundred percent sure just yet.]

Most everybody does. I'm going to do everything I can to make sure we get everyone home as soon as we can.

Yeah, it's been great. A shame I have to sleep or I'd read more, really.

[ and it's probably true, but Ed sleeps more than he's awake some days. there's little doubt Al's had to drag him out of the library snoring before. ]

That's a lot to promise, but I think if we all work together we could do it. There has to be a way back before this place just decides on a whim it wants to return us. It's why I've been doing research. I have a lot to learn about this stuff.

My kind of patron. [She jokes-- people should definitely sleep and eat, maybe engage in some other hobbies occasionally...]

I think so too. I'll warn you now, there isn't terribly much on the Ingress specifically-- and believe me, I've been on the lookout for things that talk about the nature of it at every planet we've been to so far. But we do have quite a bit on quantum physics and wormhole theories, if that interests you.

I noticed that, but anything is better than nothing. Like I said, this place is pretty different from where I'm from, so it's all new to me. And I should probably start with intermediate physics before I try to move on to something like that. It sounds complicated.

[ he shrugs a little either way. ] But thanks for helping with the library, it's great. Seems like you have a lot on your hands!

Our science collection is actually quite comprehensive if you're looking for things on physics! And if it's your first time on a space ship, I have a small collection of some technical manuals from different ships that I myself and others have found useful!

I do have a lot on my hands I suppose, but better to be busy than waiting around for something to do, right?

Technical manuals would be great. They don't have space travel where I'm from. Not yet, anyway.

[ he laughs a little. ] Well, I don't want to add more work! I can always grab the manuals another time. There's plenty to read there, after all.

Ah, then what a treat you have ahead of you. Plenty of groaning as you have to look up yet another word you don't understand. Trust me, I've been there.

You have no idea how great that is to hear-- the collection was about one hundred books when I started, and now there's plenty to read. Still, I don't mind, I've pulled the manuals dozens of times.

Yeah I guess that's just part of learning it all, huh? Can't be all fun, after all.

[ he blinks, wide eyed, however, when she mentions how much it has grown. ] One hundred? Whoa, you've really done a great job with it then. It'll take me forever to read them all, but I'm going to give it a shot! The manuals would be great, though.

We've been fortunate enough to visit planets with decent library systems and archives, and of course whatever gets pitched at us from the Ingress also gets absorbed when I have any say about it. Maybe it'll grow too fast for you to keep up~

[That's what every librarian hopes for, right?]

I keep all of the "Space 101" books on a specific shelf in the main entryway, the manuals are definitely there-- I try to keep them on hand as much as possible, especially when we have new arrivals. If you need help finding them, I'll still be around the library as much as I can be!

Maybe, but we'll give it our best shot. My brother's probably been reading more than I have.

Great, I'll definitely check them out next time I'm there. They'll be a big help. I guess living with a lot of it has been pretty helpful, but might be good to understand the mechanics of it all. [ or maybe not, he's not entirely sure he'll understand it all. ]
