Hey, so, if this thing really works like it's supposed to and it repeats whatever I say to it to everyone else... [SIGH.] I could kind of use some help. If anyone's by the feeding area? I need someone to go in there for me and get me something to eat, because whoever built this magic flying boat just HAD to cover EVERYTHING there in WOOD so I can't go in there without setting the whole thing on fire –

[She breaks off with a huff. She is really kind of embarrassed by having to ask for this – she does not like it at all. What's a good way to stop yourself feeling embarrassed? Oblique threats, probably. So:]

And, well, if nobody does go get me something, then I'll have to work out some other way to get food, and I'm pretty sure no one's going to like that.

Not really. Like, I don't really want to go in the gardens or the library, so...

Good. We can probably figure out something better than just getting people to bring you food — though that seems to be working so far.

It can't be too hard to figure out a fire-retardant to treat things with, and that'd be a good thing to have on hand anyway. You should be able to go where you like on the ship. Especially if there's an emergency where you need to.

A... fire retardant? What's that mean? Is that whatever magic they've used to make sure most of the stuff on this ship doesn't burn?

More like a potion. You can use it to treat certain materials. So it takes more to make them burn, and so it burns less of it. They're not perfect, where I'm from,

[ Unless you are using magic, but Alice doesn't intend to spend that kind of energy on a problem with simpler solutions. ]

But I bet they could make better ones here.

[Peril considers this. The magic here does seem to be pretty strong, and she hasn't heard anyone mention any kind of animus in conjunction with it, either – which is weird, but clearly things don't work the way she's used to here...]

... You really think that'd work?

Won't know until we try, but yes, probably. And we don't have to start by testing it with the whole kitchen. We can treat a sample and take it to you to start with.

If you're interested, I'll ask around. See if we could started on it. Do you have any idea how much heat you'd typically expose it to?

[ She's talking magic, so Alice is guessing that's unlikely, but you never know. ]

If not, we could try to measure it. Just to give us an idea of what we're dealing with.

Uhm... well, pretty much the only thing I can touch is stone. Everything else either burns or melts. Even metal.

I think I've got someone interested in the project. I'm not sure how long it'll take, but we can probably make it pretty effective. I'll let you know when we're ready for testing. In the mean time, do you have anywhere to sleep?

No, whatever the ship is made out of it's strong enough not to melt. I don't know if that's because of magic or – or science or whatever – or because it's some kind of metal that doesn't exist where I come from, or something... I don't know.

[... Pause.]

Why do you want to do this?

Because the fewer the things on fire, the better for everyone. Well. Usually.

Besides, you didn't ask to get stuck on the ship. You should at least be able to go where you like while you're here.
