[Niko has had a little bit of a confusing week. He didn't expect to be asked along on a diplomatic mission; usually not anything he's good at (in his mind). But he came along, figuring he was there as bodyguard more than anything else.]
[But now he's returned, and he wants to check in.]
Hey, ah.... So I just got back. I had to go with Thán for a mission and now he has a new boyfriend for peace purposes I guess. I am not really sure what happened there. Sort of like an arranged marriage? [He's actually kind of suspicious of this whole-matchmaking thing now. He's always disliked match-making on some level, but there is something deeply unsettling about it here. Just how mandatory and committing it seems.]
[He doesn't hate the match he was given, not at all. But he knows there might be people they're even better suited to.]
Look, I am a little nervous about this big business here. Capitalism is shit, government is shit, and is bad enough when taking advantage of lonely people. But I think we are going to have to be sure to be good to the new guy because we saw what happened the last time we fucked up diplomacy.

Alright, so what's your read on this guy? The match?
no subject
These children, Link's, they are the product of his special system to make children. This is the youngest son and has not lived up to the match they have been expecting.
So if he is a plant, he is a plant. I also think they might be using this ship to get him out of their hair.

[ it's a well-known barrayaran game among the vor, too, but at least they don't play it like this. miles scowls darkly. ]
What about below surface value? C'mon, Niko, you've gotta have an opinion on this guy.
no subject
This man is the child of rich people. Rich people with much influence, and access to genetically engineered associates. I do not think they would take it well if something bad became of their son.
People are good at hiding who they really are and if you get too focused on weeding out the enemies you will weed out potential for allies too. I also I think there are two very bad places this could potentially go, so let us just hope that this is just a very awkward arrangement and keep a good eye on the two ways it could go wrong.
no subject
I'm not being paranoid, Niko, if that's what you're suggesting. Well -- alright, I am, but I think it's justified in this case.
And what two ways do you see this going wrong? [ he smiles grimly. ] Let me guess -- one of those scenarios involves the death of our new guest.
no subject
[Niko is a killer by trade. He's not the only one.]
no subject
Of course. And why don't we have a frigging Chief of Security? [ rhetorical question. he'll have to bring that one up to thán. ha. ] Anyone in particular you think we should be concerned about, or do you advise general panic? Professional panic, of course. Any and all panic should be kept professional.

Plus, we already saw what one little drug on a full moon could do to a normal headed person like you. Imagine to someone like that?
Even our own balance is very complicated, and now we have extra guy in on top of that.
no subject
You think I'm normal-headed? Have you met me?
Look, if you're going to take that tack, there already are kidnappers in positions of authority. The captains didn't bring us here, the Ingress did. And what about the captains? If it happened to us, it could happen to that. [ miles lets out a frustrated sigh and rakes his fingers through his hair. ] I get what you're saying, I do, but there has to be some kind of order to a place like this or it all falls apart. Nearly my entire career has been spent aboard military ships. I know what I'm talking about. I've seen mutinies, Niko, and believe me, we're not even close to one right now.
no subject
And yeah, you were human Miles. How often would you be put in the hold for the dumb shit you pull, where you break into things or start trouble because you are curious. Let bad things out to kill people. How many people would be made to be locked away by other people stuck here as them, just because they want to know about this place and why they're trapped here?
And yeah, normal headed. Like can make words and not be a were-wolf. But what if someone who is in security broke such as this and were like Clark, like Banner? What if they were a giant robot or dragon? Get their head fucked with.
[And he's had very bad experiences with peers hunting each other down on ships like these. But that's harder to explain.]
no subject
So what would you prefer, complete anarchy? There's no such thing as a perfect system here, but there has to be something. It's not a military ship, no, but it could benefit from a structure like one.
Not having a chain of command isn't going to stop weird shit from happening! If something happens we deal with it. Having contingencies is part of the chain of command. Got any command experience, Niko? Because I do, and with people like the captains in charge, it's a major case of the blind leading the blind, dangerous, and crazy.
[ whoops. ]
no subject
And the more you talk the more I think you are just the same.
no subject
I'll give you dangerous and crazy, but don't you think for a second that I'm blind. I know exactly what I'm looking at. You know we have children on board now, right? People who need protecting? It's not just about containing potential danger, Niko. Don't you think we need some kind of system in place to help those who can't help themselves? If this were one of my ships you'd be damned sure we'd have one.
no subject
You say so yourself. We're not near a mutiny right now. You want that guy protected? Ask for him to be protected. Many will volunteer. Is not an obligation.

[That's almost English?!! Moving on.]
Then what are you responsible for, Miles? How many people died because you stuck your nose into room where you weren't supposed to be. How many times do you throw yourself under a bus as if you do not trust the people around you to do what is necessary to.
You cannot handle the responsibility of a ship like this, but you think you can. And you probably do not have very good ideas on who would be. All bias to people you like. Maybe the captains cannot do a great job, either, but at least they're familiar with what ship we are on and what it can do.
no subject
This is -- that's different! What the hell is your alternative, Niko, complete anarchy? Goddammit, that doesn't work! Sometimes casualties happen -- and when you're in command you take responsibility for them. The captains wouldn't even admit responsibility for my death. You think I couldn't command a ship like this? I command a whole frigging fleet!
[ somewhere in that furious rapid-speech rant, miles' accent wavers and slip-slides into something totally different -- something that to niko's ears would sound way more american than russian. ]
no subject
Or do you not get that either?
We're equals. This moving forward fast shit- fuck that. Fuck deciding that you can make choices for all of us. The children. Me. You. We are in this together and you are not so above it as you think you are.
no subject
How I -- you mean when I broke into the morgue and got myself trapped for three days? I came out the worst for that than anyone else, and I didn't do it for myself. I did it because I'm tired of the captains and their cagey bullshit and keeping us all in the dark. You think I couldn't run a ship like this? You're dead wrong, Niko. This wouldn't even rank over some of the things I've done. Don't you tell me what I'm capable of, because you don't know.
[ but he falters when niko brings up equality, brings up miles' obviously inflated sense of self-importance and superiority. he still looks angry, though, breathing hard. ]
This isn't about -- god dammit, Niko, I didn't --
no subject
You don't even know what you are capable of, nor do you care. All that matters is if you make progress, but you don't even know what that progress is meant to be or how it will help. It's not okay when people who do not volunteer to help with you get hurt by the things you do. We are not your soldiers.
[Why the hell is Miles' accent changing? Fuck it. He can't talk to crazy people. He's becoming possessed by some crazy American general.] You mean everything you say, Miles. You mean this and now I know you mean what you said to me before, if this is how you are when you are when you are not watching what you say. I do not want to put up with anyone being an asshole to me anymore today, and that is what you are being.
no subject
[ he falters there, looking a little nauseated -- fuck, is he actually going betan on niko right now? did he actually just talk about the fleet, about naismith? oh, god. and that accusation -- i know you mean what you said before -- it hits him like a kick in the stomach. because he hadn't, he really hadn't -- that had been the exuo talking, not miles, he wouldn't have ever, and --
but niko is hitting too many points, though most of them won't even really register until later. the anger drains completely away from miles' face along with the color, leaving him looking suddenly pale and like he might be sick and also like he might be panicking internally because he super is. his accent abruptly slides back to barrayaran, though his mouth hangs open a moment before he actually manages to say anything. ]
No, Niko, I -- I didn't mean it, what I said back then. I don't think of you like that, I never have. I -- [ miles' chest feels tight, suddenly it's hard to breathe. the video feed jitters slightly as he realizes his hands are shaking. oh, god. did he really just -- ] Shit. I'm sorry, Niko, I didn't -- I don't...
no subject
I beat myself up enough. I do not need your help to feel shitty. So unless it is important or job or emergency, it is best if we do not talk for a little while.
[He's not ready to forgive. He's not close enough to Miles to handle this.]
no subject
instead what niko gets is a faltering nod of acknowledgment before miles hangs up. ]
