I've not had the chance to bring it up. However, a while ago I added some competitive programs to the training simulation room. They're meant to give people another healthy outlet for conflict and hostile energy as well as improve skills as matched by an opponent.

There are several games as well as the option to customize your own. There are also two settings. One "honest" where cheating will absolutely not be tolerated. One "deceptive" where cheating is so long as the AI referees don't catch you and you don't cause serious harm to your opponent. Surprisingly, both have their merits.

This is also a reminder that you can get hurt in there. It is possible, so ask a Med Bay staff member if to come along if necessary.

That said, I'd like to speak to someone on the medical staff if you have the time. At least I'll have a better idea of who people can request aid from while I'm at it. But I understand with recent changes you might have to wait.

There's value in watching out for an opponent attempting to break rules or attempting to do so yourself. Though both options exist because some people prefer to work within extremely strict systems that leave no wiggle room.

[ andyr's likely been in and out of that room a lot in the last week since the space jellies incident, as he doesn't trust himself for traditional sparring, and the sims let him be as lethal as he likes, so long as what he's killing is made up of pixels. while the games would have real people put into them, he can't help being stupid amounts of excited for it. ]

Do we win something for beating the games or high score? Or just bragging rights?

Sounds like a good way to develop some techniques. I'm definitely going to have to check it out.

What happens if you try cheating in the other option, do they put you in some sort of time out?

Bragging, rights, I'm afraid.

It also gives me the opportunity to see everyone's abilities, what they need to improve on and what they already do very well.

Up to you. Either severe drop in points, or automatic loss. The point of that one is to be able to succeed within the given rules.

They'll just have to try harder to get away with it.

In that case there are AI referees, and while they know there's a possibility of cheating and are observant, they're not omnipotent. So the point is more to get by the system than it is for the other player not to notice.

There's the option of team versus team, too. If you could find enough for that.

Well since we're already establishing that cheating is totally a thing, there aren't actual consequences are there?

Depends on what the players decide. Either point deductions or an automatic loss. In the "honest" setting you would automatically have those consequences supplied, in "deceptive" they're only applied if you're caught.

So what makes you qualified for that? Are you some kind of badass?

The best luck I've had with team competition has been with capture the flag. But the usual brands of competitive sports would be easy enough to program in.

I'm a survivalist and drill instructor and private force military commander. Challenging people to make them improve is something I enjoy.

Outside of that, I can handle myself.

[Which is being modest. But he has spent the last few months recovering from a period of missing two limbs and having to learn his prosthetics. He's lucky to have even lived through that, very well be back in fighting shape.]

Something like that. A little bit more organized and with a sharp business acumen about good employers.

[He's still torn about whether or not he's proud of his PF or not. He built it with the best intentions but, he's learned a lot since getting here. But their business and cultural value is another huge philosophical ramble that it's really a miracle for anyone spared of it.]

Unfortunately in real world settings, someone slipping something by you can end up in a lot worse than a point loss. I know that all too well.

Being paranoid is fine by me, so long as it veers in the direction of "prepared for the worst". [Because honestly he doesn't want anyone to be as paranoid as he's been; and sometimes continues to be. At least he's not asking people to side-eye everyone else.]

What counts as good for employers?

[ it doesn't particularly seem like anyone with the kind of money to hire a private military could have altruistic goals in mind, but then again, where he's from, you have militarys manufactured out of clones and shipped out to people to terrorize lesser nations and territories over resources or the right to say This Is Mine, so Andyr's expectations are pretty low on the subject. ]

Ones that pay fairly and won't sell you out.

The original idea was to give professional soldiers a way to continue their careers without having to marry themselves to any national ideology. Because of that, some bases ended up with a lot of former enemies on the same side. Healthy competition and goal-directed training became a good outlet for the negative energy.

[Again, still not sure of how that'll go. He just wanted businesses. He didn't expect it to become what it eventually did. He's been standing back and taking a look at it, at where it went wrong and how he was manipulated. But his business is still his baby and for now he wants to think the best of it.]

I'm Japanese born, American father, Japanese mother. Former enemy politics there. That sort of thing used to be really important to me.

You're still a weapon for someone with a lot of power and an agenda, aren't you? So where's the difference?

[ not spoken heatedly, just genuinely curious. the latter statement has him nodding to himself (not carried over audio), and there's likely some metallic shuffling going on as he squirms through the vents he'd been hanging out in, towards the training rooms. ]

I won't take any jobs that might lead to kids getting hurt. I make that a priority. Otherwise, political squabbles are their own business. And the difference is when we get tired of it, we can leave. It is sad though. Always someone with an agenda, and they'll fuck over anyone in their way until they change their mind. By the time you join a business like ours, you're usually already pretty far from having a home.
