[it's obvious david was a bloodhound in another life. not that it's extremely hard to be able to tell this has nothing to do with getting to know people and has more to do with getting to know himself. but, you know, it's kind of hard to be truthful about your feelings when you're:

1. a legend
2. have never been truthful about your feelings in your entire life

Can you make the ultimate sacrifice for the greater good? Where do you draw the line in the sand?

[ Reading some of the other responses had certainly been illuminating. Snake usually doesn't go through all that trouble unless he thinks there's some interesting information to be found among all the random chitchat, but...

Well, this is a special case. ]

We've ended up in this line of work because we're capable of making that decision. Not everyone can make the pragmatic choice. You do what you have to, because doing nothing would be worse.

Is pragmatism really worth it in the end? Or is that just a lie we live with?

Who are you asking?

[ Had Big Boss struggled with these thoughts in the time leading up to Outer Heaven? Or it learning about all those events that has put him in this mood? Snake can't begin to guess. He thought he'd known this man, but now he may as well be a giant question mark to him. ]

Why? You think you have the answer for it?

[anyone can answer the question, give him some ideological solution that makes him a dead saint or a living demon. but there's no such thing as black and white, right or wrong, there's just the decision you make in the moment and what comes after.]

My point is that it seems like this is something you have to answer for yourself. It's not going to help hearing it from anyone else.

[ It might not be easy, struggling with these kinds of philosophical questions, especially with the lives they've led. But this doesn't really seem like the right way to cope with it. ]
