Let's talk hypotheticals.

You're crossing a suspension bridge. You have to reach the other side at any cost. The bridge is wide enough only for one person to pass at a time.

A man approaches from the other side with a gun. How do you cross?

This is quite the question.

You've told others it could be someone familiar— for myself, personally, there would be no reason for anyone to shoot. I could simply backtrack until they've crossed then continue on my way without conflict.

[ She's well-known as a doctor, after all. Non-violence would be the default assumption, whether she carries her gun or no. ]

If it came down to another minute or two gone or someone's life, the answer should be obvious. I'd negotiate and concede position to a better alternative.
