[technology like this is easier to learn the second time around. so steve rogers, product of the 1940's, takes to the tab like a duck to water.]

Just when I thought I couldn't get any farther from Brooklyn, I end up on another planet. But between the cave and all those Flash Gordon comics that my buddy and I used to read, maybe I should've seen this one coming.

[speaking of buddies:]

My name's Steve Rogers. I'm looking for anyone who might've ended up here with me, or maybe knew me before that. [steve frowns, brows thoughtfully furrowed.] Or...after that, I guess. I hear I look a little bit different then.

I'd also rather not waste any time when it comes to pulling my own weight, but I'd like to do that while also helping others. If anyone knows of jobs that can do both, I'm all ears. Thanks.

[Bucky nods, growing quiet for a moment as he considers the best way to go about it.]

Helmut Zemo lost his family at Sokovia. Where you, the Avengers, were trying to stop a guy named Ultron. The United Nations decided that your team needed to be managed. Some of you agreed, some of you didn't. [Bucky couldn't give Steve all the details there, he only knew what he'd seen on tv or in the papers. What Nat had told him.] He made a plan, set off a bomb. Framed me for the murder of the Wakandan king and the others. Everyone was lookin' for me then.

[When all he'd wanted was left alone.]

You got to me first, but it didn't matter. They got to us, took me in. Zemo was there, said the goddamn words, and I was the soldier again. You and your friends tried to stop me. You took me out, Wilson helped you. Got us away. [He's frowning now.] Zemo wanted to know where the other Winter Soldiers were kept. I wasn't the only one. You knew Tony wouldn't listen, but we tried to get to Zemo anyway.

[His eyes flick to Steve.]

You all fought, Steve. You were a good team, friends. We managed to get to Zemo and he told.. Tony found out that I was the one who killed them, his parents. Zemo wasn't trying to get the other Winter Soldiers, he was trying to bring you down. Break your team up and he did.

Let me guess, I'm one of the ones who didn't.

[to being "managed". he almost bristles at the idea of it right now, but settles himself enough to continue listening. each new layer makes him frown a little more, until steve has to will himself to relax and take a breath.]

All for one man's revenge.

[it's quiet, almost to himself. steve rubs his face. he feels for the man who lost his family, he does. but to drag bucky into it, tony, everyone.]

What happened to us after that? You and me.

Course not, Steve. You've always been good at making the right calls.

[When they were growing up, during the war, after. Bucky would follow Steve into hell itself if his friend thought it was the right choice.]

Wanda, Sam, Clint, Scott. They were arrested. You got 'em out but none of you could go home. The king that died, his son. T'Challa. He blamed me at first, too, but he's a kind man. Smart. He helped us. I, um, lost my arm again, and I asked T'Challa to put me back under the ice until his doctors could get HYDRA out of my head. [He runs his real fingers over the back of his metal hand.] I went to sleep and woke up in a place called Wonderland. Like the book. Someone there made me a new one.

[Bucky pauses, exhaustion settling over him. He's said so much in such a short amount of time and he's already past what's easy for him.]

You were there, though. Bigger. You'd been there for years somehow. You knew a Bucky before me, too and were convinced we were the same person, only I'd left for a while and forgotten about Wonderland. Uh, you - [Bucky sighs.] They'd been together. I mean, we were I guess. The you there was in love with me. He didn't tell me and I was pissed to find out on my own. Thought you should know about it, now. So you don't feel I'm ever being dishonest with you.

I fell asleep and woke up on the ship that came here to Thisavrou.

[steve knows most of those names, but it's wanda's that hurts the most. he'd met her back in the cave. she was always kind to him, brought him apples. he's talked to her here too, and seems just as nice. the last thing he wants is to get her into trouble.

he's starting to feel like that's just the price for being his friend.

the story gets better. kinda. sorta. and then it gets to wonderland, the part where he and bucky were together. his eyebrows lift.]

Huh. Well since we're bein' honest and all, the you back in the cave and I used to sleep in the same bed. Nothing happened, I think you just wanted to make sure I was alright. [steve gives him a soft quick smile.] The other you, does he know all this too?

[Bucky returns the smile, eyes lighting up in a way that only ever happens when he's around Steve. Any Steve, apparently. Which says a lot for how much he means to Bucky.]

I used to sleep on his couch. Nothing happened between us either, but that's cause I disappeared one night and couldn't find my way back. [His brow furrows when he thinks of the other Bucky. He hadn't had the time on his own that he did.] Most of it. We talked about a lot. He's younger though.

[Not by much, but it feels like a lifetime.]

He's still remembering, but he'd know you. We could never forget you.

We've talked. A little. Not as much as you and me.

[but enough for steve to have figured a thing or two out.]

He's probably from around the same time as the Bucky I left behind. They're both kinda skittish.

[and he wonders now about the one he left behind, if he'll be okay without him. steve can feel the guilt on his shoulders like a tangible thing.]

[That's exactly how the other Bucky is. How he used to be. Still can be sometimes.]

Would've been not long after he got away from HYDRA. Took some time to remember things after that. This place hasn't been easy on him.

[His phone buzzes in his pocket and he flips it out to check it. With a small smile, he shifts over on the bench to show Steve a few pictures. A cat, a plum tree.]

Guess this is the point where I tell you that I'm a farmer now. [His mouth quirks.] Can you imagine that, pal. Bucky Barnes farming. I grow trees to make money, but it's peaceful.

I'll help him.

[because he knows he can, he's done it before, even if "helping" started out as an unwillingness to stay away the way bucky wanted him to.

steve breaks out of his thoughts to lean over, smiling at the pictures.]

He's cute. [about the cat, before bucky adds the rest of it. steve arches a brow.] You got a cow? You ain't a real farmer unless you've got a cow.

[he's just teasing though. steve leans back again with a smile.]

I'm happy for you, Buck. You deserve some peace.

I want to.

[The but goes unsaid. Bucky is still uncomfortable around the other Bucky. He.. reminds him of things he's trying to forget. He knows how he thinks, what he's going to do before he does it. He isn't sure how to be around him.]

No cow, but there's a farm next to mine that has chickens.

[Or the alien equivalent. He's not real sure.]

I dunno what your plans are, Steve, but I can help. I've got work if you need a job. A spare room if you need a place to stay.

Thanks, Buck. But I'm pretty sure you know what I'm going to say.

[steve smiles up at him. mr. independent has to feel like he can take care of himself.]

But I promise I'll call on you if I do need help. We talked about that back in the cave.

Well, I am hiring, punk. So if you feel the farm-life call to you, come my way.

[Bucky has one employee already and is able to take on someone else. It's not for everybody, tending trees and harvesting fruit, but it has a soothing pace that Bucky enjoys.]

Tell me about it. The cave. What you've been doing.

I don't know how I feel about having you as my boss.

[once it would've been an absolute no way. but now, after all that they've been through, after all that steve knows they've still got to get through, it's not so bad.]

You remember that old Bela Lugosi film that you made me watch? The one with zombies? I fought the real thing.

[Bucky sighs, glancing at Steve with a solemn expression - totally feigned. He hadn't thought about it that way. He's pretty sure Mettaton, who works on the farm with him, doesn't even think of Bucky as his boss, but he knows Steve, he does things his own way.]

Yeah.

[He raises a brow and for a second he considers that Steve is pulling his leg.]

You serious? Zombies?

Yeah, fought 'em alongside this guy named Dean. He was amazing. Had a friend who was an actual angel, if you can believe that.
