[technology like this is easier to learn the second time around. so steve rogers, product of the 1940's, takes to the tab like a duck to water.]

Just when I thought I couldn't get any farther from Brooklyn, I end up on another planet. But between the cave and all those Flash Gordon comics that my buddy and I used to read, maybe I should've seen this one coming.

[speaking of buddies:]

My name's Steve Rogers. I'm looking for anyone who might've ended up here with me, or maybe knew me before that. [steve frowns, brows thoughtfully furrowed.] Or...after that, I guess. I hear I look a little bit different then.

I'd also rather not waste any time when it comes to pulling my own weight, but I'd like to do that while also helping others. If anyone knows of jobs that can do both, I'm all ears. Thanks.

I patrolled a lot, scavenged for the clinic. Unless you're talking about Brooklyn, then I mostly just...sold newspapers.

[steve's surprised, until he remembers that that happened before too. people would know him, tell him that he should be taller. maybe that's the pattern, his future self paving the way everywhere he goes now.]

Yeah, exactly. I like to do everything that I can, as long as it doesn't involve any little red wagon.

Pretty sure it was you. So don't be surprised if you run into him-- you? And watch out cause he could bench press like 50 yous.

We don't even got a car, but we got an office. Sometimes its real shit work, though-- once, literally.

[ok, that part is new. steve gives himself a few moments to think about it, prepare for it, before nodding to himself.]

What kind of work do you do? It sounds- [what's the polite way to put this? got it.] challenging.

I ain't gonna pretend to know what's going on, Steve, but I'm glad you're back. Well, here. [One leaves, another shows up. Doesn't matter much to Bucky if Steve's big or small.] Are you somewhere safe?

Steve.

[There's no way to keep this from being awkward, is there? He won't remember her, and that stings, but she has to respond.]

It is good to see you again.

[it's more than just knowing her name. there's recognition in his eyes, in his voice.]

You too. Is this where you ended up?

Buck?

[so maybe that knot in his stomach wasn't because of the ingress, because it's loosening now.]

Back? Oh, right. [because he's heard by now. steve's starting to feel like he's always going to live in the shadow of his future self. and from what he hears, it's a pretty big shadow.] Not exactly. Are you alright?

Odd jobs kinda thing-- if it makes money and it ain't too dangerous, we'll do it. I do info brokering on the side but that's more my deal.

Whatever pays the rent. I remember those days, wouldn't have cared if the work was dangerous or not. I never got a lot of those jobs though.

[And that's enough to make most of her tension visually disappear, although it raises more questions than it answers. Wanda won't complain, but by all rights he shouldn't have any idea who she is. Or anything about Captain America, really.]

I have not been at home for a long time. Almost a year and half, more if you count the time slip.

[steve's glad to see her. she became a close friend, so much so that he'll have to use a little restraint when he figures out that she doesn't remember - or more correctly, that she isn't exactly the same.

he's starting to figure that out now, or at least question it.]

[he's already learned that time can be a pretty fickle thing.]

I was at the base in New York, with you, until the Ingress brought me to the Moira.

You remember something else.

[It isn't a question. This isn't the first or even the second time Steve's been brought here with no memory of it, but it is the first time it's been so weird.]

Can't pay anything if you're dead...but I see what you mean. Depending on what you can do, we'll settle ya with something you want. Or you know, shit.

Yeah, I do.

[he wonders if it's a good idea to tell her, not that he could lie to her if she wanted to know.]

Before I came here, I was living in an underground city. You were there too.

[steve perks up a little at that.]

Yeah? I can do anything you need me to do. All I need is a chance.

Yeah, it's me. [Sort of. Not the only one. If Bucky was better at lying to Steve, he wouldn't admit there's another of him, but all he can do is let his best friend know and hope it's not the same as before - and this Steve won't pick one over the other.] You should know there's two of us. I'm the oldest by a couple years, but we've both got quite a few on you.

Gotta be honest, it's makin' me homesick seeing you like this.

[Bucky flicks to video.]

I wanna see you, but I don't look the same as you remember.

Next time shit hits the fan, a buncha jobs open up. Oh-- I've got an office in Kauto, R1. Called Stray Jobs.

You look exactly the same. I guess jerks just age well.

[he smiles faintly. steve got used to the longer hair and the scruff, the metal arm. maybe he never completely reconciled it with the bucky he knew in his mind, but from what he learned, he wasn't really that bucky anyway. he'd changed.

two buckys. damn. one to lecture him and one to try to stop him.]

I haven't been home in months. I was stuck someplace else, with you. Or...maybe the other you. Or maybe neither. [yeah, this isn't too confusing.] So the other one's not from the 40's?

[ oh. what? uh. ]

You're small again.

[ A+, andyr, way to go, stating the obvious like a champ. give him a second, he's processing. ]
