hawkethat: (two shots of tequila and a sliced lime)

Memoir One ✓ video

[The video opens on the face of a handsome man in possession of a truly magnificent beard. He hesitates for a brief second until he's sure the device is working, then flashes a charming grin.]

This is a really strange question, but I'm going to ask it anyway:

Does anyone have any ideas about the best way to befriend oneself? Multiple attempts at striking up a friendly conversation have ended in vomit and tears, so I'm kind of at a loss.

I warned you not to try and pick me up after I’d been drinking. I hope when you go to the bar you don’t literally pick anyone up.

...And there were no tears.

[The camera shifts to as the man looks at a thin woman with dark hair and light eyes, playing idly with her TAB. This is Marian Hawke as many know her. Unlike the man who’s grinning, she mostly looks like she’s bewildered at how she got into this situation and how best to get out of it. Despite the different expressions, however, the resemblance between them is distinct.]

Normally I'd take them out for a few drinks and then maybe stumble over to a brothel, but that seems a little...eh, I dunno, is "incestuous" the right word, here? Or would "masturbatory" be more appropriate?

“Masturbatory”, definitely.

[Is the lady Hawke’s vote.]

Let’s not disrespect biology by going with "incestuous". Though you can buy me another drink all the same. I never turn down a gift.

Hmm...I was leaning that way too, honestly. Still, awkward.

[Here he pauses again to flash another charming grin at the TAB, and also wink conspiratorially.]

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Oh, I can’t wait to see what the people come up with. Hopefully it involves more drinking.

[She just… shakes her head and glances at the sky, wondering what she did to deserve this.]

[Next thing you know, she'll be looking at two quantum redheads.]

I'm going to be the voice of dissent here and suggest that more drinking will produce the same result, with potential for increasingly worse results.

I think you may be assuming that you have everything in common with one another-- aside from the... obvious difference. But the two of you have most likely had some separate experiences and developed as people differently. So I wouldn't treat it as 'getting to know yourself' at all. Just... an extremely similar person.

...uh huh.

[See this face, sir? This is the face of someone calling your bullshit. While her experiences with drinking have been overwhelmingly negative, she can't say that it's the case for everyone else. But she can say that nobody is that lucky and never has had a bad time with alcohol. That's just science.]

I can't say I've ever met myself-- [when both of them were alive] --but the science is something I'm very familiar with. And, to some degree, I've seen it in action with two people from my own timeline. Coincidentally also a case of a male R. Lutece meeting a female R. Lutece-- and both of them got along. More or less. A few disagreements here and there. Robert was a little more optimistic than Rosalind, but being a woman physicist can you blame her for being more realistic?

[Somehow Elizabeth doesn't quite buy that women are realistic by default, but maybe some clarification will help this guy out.] It's a type of scientist. And where I'm from, women who don't put their life into their home or religion are generally frowned upon. So while Robert was met with praise and admiration from his colleagues, Rosalind spent her life battling with hers for a little recognition. That sort of environment and interaction affects how we develop as people.

That being said I wouldn't be so quick to assume a certain mood based on a life story, we have been thrown around quite a bit in the past few weeks. Still, it couldn't hurt to find where your lines diverge.

I never said where I came from was a place that made some logical sense. It's actually incredibly backwards, limiting, and you couldn't pay me enough to go back.

[Not that she could, but you know. It's the principle of the thing.]

...I wouldn't call vomiting a form of communication, no. Who's Kitty?

It's the best thing that's ever happened to me.

[And that's some genuine talk, there. Columbia was terrible, being alone was worse, and Rapture literally killed her. A spaceship, a library, and a boyfriend (even if he was long gone), were unbelievable good fortune as far as she's concerned.]

And can you have conversations with dogs?

[Also serious, one never knows around these parts.]
otiosity: (i dont know how i feel about that)

We can't be all that similar. I do have some semblance of good taste. Just a-

[Makes a small gesture with her fingers.]

Though it sounds like you've done this before. Did you meet a double and get drunk? Hopefully you didn't do anything masturbatory.

[Elizabeth isn't quite sure what she's getting at with that gesture but moving on--]

At the risk of sounding self-deprecating, I'm not exactly my own "type". [She'd like to think that any other double of herself feels the same way.]

I've seen my own double in passing, but we've never been in the same place long enough to have a conversation. Even if we had, I don't know that we'd have much to talk about or even argue over. It sounds like the two of you have a miraculous opportunity to know what would have happened if you'd made a different choice. ...Assuming you both didn't diverge purely on the X-Versus-Y Chromosome matter, but I'd find it very hard to believe the only difference is that.
