[ well this has fuck all to do with either the holidays or cave spelunking, but here we go. ]

[It takes him at least ten minutes to get back to this, because there's a lot of mixed emotions. Mostly because he did everything that a good spouse should do. Provided his significant other with a home, with "diamonds". He committed himself to Big Boss longer than most marriages last.]

[He came to love Ahab in almost equal measure. But no matter what's between them now Ahab's never said anything to make Kaz believe he feels the same way.]

No. But I had something pretty good for a long time. Nothing physical. Just a very strong partnership.

He left me, though. I guess it could be described as breaking up because he wanted a promotion and I never even got a Dear John letter. He figured I'd deal with it.

So now I got Ahab until he leaves, too.

[He'd like that priest to say a few words on his behalf, though, since they made peace on the ship and still Kaz couldn't save him.]

[ it's a sad story, and andyr feels for him, even with a bitterness towards the man who'd abandoned kaz for whatever personal gain he found more important. the last line has him frowning, and it isn't a thought he can accept. ]

He would if someone was more important than me, and someone is to him. I already know it's going to happen unless I'm lucky enough to change things. It's already been decided and we had been preparing for it before we were brought here.

[He's not going to make any assumptions otherwise yet. He wants Venom to go with him, or at least to go somewhere else and lead a better life, but he's prepared for him not to. Kaz is ready to go it alone- perhaps for the first time in a long time. At least nine years of clawing himself along gave him that.]

Don't bring it up to him. I don't think it would help. He does his best with what he has. It's just good that he has friends that don't salute him on sight.

[ he reads over the message, something conflicting in him, wanting to object to ahab being the kind of person to abandon someone he cares for. but there's what andyr wants, and then there's reality. if he'd leave kaz, he'd leave him too. what is he anyway, some kid that's been following him around?

it's a long moment before he replies, and in the end, it's simple. ]

Who salutes him on sight? Or who is more important than me?

His soldiers for the first.

For the second? [Should he mention this? Big Boss already showed up once before and Kaz had said enough that someone was able to do the math. The situation had been different (trying to tell someone that their gender preferences didn't carry as much weight as they thought they did) but it was enough to come back and bite him in the ass. Even now, he figures this will.]

[But he decides to say a little, despite his own prediction of sticking his foot in it, only for Ahab's sake.] It's that last partner I had. He didn't leave Ahab with a lot of choices, not ones he felt good enough for or knew how to take. It's less that he had him by the balls, and more that

[That sentence is actually sent unfinished. He doesn't know how to add more to that. Because how do you best describe "stopped being a person" without actually saying that? Besides, he made peace with Big Boss while he was here, and Ahab wouldn't appreciate the name being dragged too far through the mud (even by vague description).]

If you know any popular leaders you have to trust to make things better, then you know what happened to him.

who's more important

i dont know any of those kinds. just bad ppl and worse ppl.

what's that mean for ahab?

[ andyr can guess, he thinks, but he wants it worded out. he wants to know what it is that turns ahab into someone less than he is, and why. ]

I don't know.

[It means he's going to get killed if he doesn't change the course of things. But that part isn't for him to say, because the man that kills him isn't the "bad guy" of the story. In the end, they are.]

I want him to have a good life, though. I'm going to do my very best to make sure that happens. Don't worry about that.
