[VIDEO] 001
[So, with much effort, the MID starts broadcasting a close up of...well, it's a very green eye.]
Is...Is this thing on? Does the light mean it's on? Please let the light mean that it's on...
[The figure pulls back to reveal...a face! Just a normal face, covered in...soot? Burns? One of his bangs might be on fire.]
Okay, so...first off, I guess I should introduce myself. My name's Darin Altway, Master Blacksmith. I'm new here and I guess my new job is mechanical engineer on the Ingress?
[Darin is pointedly keeping the camera close to his face. He looks nervous.]
So uh...full disclosure? I don't know what an Ingress is. Or half of what these things are.
Most of what these things are.
...Almost all of these things.
And I lost my blacksmith hammer, so I've kind of been making due with the tools on hand and hahaha...so, funny story, you can't just hit things with hammers to make them work? Crazy, right? So...if anyone who knows anything about...uh...any of these gadgets and gizmos could come on down to engineering and give me a crash course in...um... everything, I would really appreciate--
[He's cut off by what sounds like something backfiring and creating a much larger fire.]
GAH!! OW!! HOT!! HOT HOT HO--
[The video ends there.]

video
[mainly just so he can get darin away from anything and make sure he doesn't hurt himself more.]
Re: video
Area.
And it's just a small fire. I can totally put it out. I just need to find some water.
Re: video
mostly because he's taken off skating down the hall.]
Don't tell me you're about to throw water on an electrical fire.
Re: video
That would be...
...Ill-advised?
Re: video
a heavy sigh escapes him.]
Water conducts electricity. You're only going to make it worse and risk shocking yourself. I don't know if you know what electricity is, but let me tell you right now hearts don't take too kindly to sharp shocks and tend to stop beating when hit by one.
[ie: STOP FUCKING AROUND THIS IS SERIOUS]
Try to put something over it. Like a blanket or heavy clothing.
Re: video
Heavy clothing...
Right, gotcha! I'm on it!
[Darin's solution is to take off his pants and start smacking the fire with them.]
video > action
[talking to himself because he doesn't actually remember. anyway, lúcio is gonna skate in a couple minutes later, playing his healing beats just in case.]
Fire extinguisher, where is it?!
Re: video > action
[Those pants, now tattered and burned to the point where they're just strips of fabric, are pretty much just fanning the blaze now.]
I have no idea what that is!!
action
[lúcio does know what an extinguisher is, however, and immediately skates over to the one in the corner.]
Alright, get back! I'm gonna do the thing!
Re: action
Alright, I'm clear! Go for it!!
Re: action
What did you even do, man?! [lúcio shouts over the noise.] It's like a gas stove up in here!
Re: action
I'm a blacksmith, dammit! Not a mage!!
Re: action
he fixes darin with a wry looks.]
You didn't think to ask anyone?
Re: action
I mean...I'm a quick study but I guess this is all out of my league.
Re: action
[lúcio smiles, feeling pretty bad for the position darin was put in.]
I'm sure a master blacksmith could take one look at the walls and figure out how to make them air better.
Re: action
But to be honest? I'm kind of excited to be working around things I've never even heard of before. I like learning and putting that knowledge to new uses.
Now that the fire's out, I get to learn how to fix everything!
Re: action
[lúcio skates along the room, putting the extinguisher back and marking it as used.]
Mind if I watch? I wanna see how you work.
Re: action
I mean, first I need to break down the console completely into all of its base parts. Document each and every one. Sketch them out. Look them up in the manual to find out what purpose they serve and how they connect.
I mean, if you're okay with that, I wouldn't really mind the company. I'm itchin' to get started!
Re: action
[taking apart an entire console seems a bit dramatic for a little bit of fire damage...]
Re: action
Sure, I could do that, but where's the fun? There's something to be said for taking something apart with your own two hands, exploring how it's made, documenting it, learning how each and every piece fits together, like a puzzle...
[Say what you want about Darin; he's goofy, impetuous, hot-blooded, maybe even naive. But when he gets to work, when he finds something genuinely interesting and can take it apart? There's an honest to goodness fire in his eyes. Passion lights up his features, and Lucio can already tell that whatever points he could make, Darin is beyond hearing them as he pulls out parts and lays them out methodically. As haphazard as he is, he's surprisingly delicate when he starts breaking things down.]
See, people get all worked up when they discover new things...uncharted regions, undocumented treasures, things like that. And don't get me wrong, that's cool and all? But what about the things we already know how to build? How to make? How do all of those things fit together? How they work in conjunction with one another to create a much greater whole? Everyone thinks a sword is just a sword, but it's not. It's a blade, it's a hilt, it's a guard and crosspiece. There are rivets and screws, there's different types of grips on the handle. Hell, even something as little as a gem on a pommel can completely change the character of a sword!
And don't get me started on armor. There's straps and bolts and seams. Every piece of armor, every weapon, every thing is built in its own way. Everything has a story and everything works together. That's what being a true blacksmith is all about; not just hammering away until you make something. It's about understanding every aspect, every concept before you even pick up your hammer...!
Re: action
Armour... you know, you just gave me an idea, man. There's a ton of people with armour on this ship. What do you think about getting them all together to share notes a couple times a month? We could help each other upkeep it and stuff!
Re: action
What do I think? I think that's an amazing idea! Armor needs to be properly maintained! Plus, think of everything we could learn from each other! Forging methods! Tools! Upkeep! Designs!
I could fill a dozen notebooks that way!!
Re: action
[HAHA RHYMES]
One of my pals has a giant set power armour! You'd love it!
Re: action
Like, yesterday.
Re: action
I mean, probably!
