[It’s been a long time since she’s addressed the community. While she’s always sounded annoyed, now there’s a heartache behind the anger. An exhaustion, a defeat.]

Back in the desert we got this story that gets told to every greenie that shows up in the sand. That it don’t matter if you went and got dusted ‘cause your shadow still lives on. [A shaky, sharp breath.] Killjoys never die.

But in this place, it ain’t true. The desert doesn’t believe in death but here there’s no life to begin with. Light’s out is just light’s out. [The anger in her voice picks up, deep and visceral.] All this place gives is empty promise after empty promise, dangles lil’ shiny pieces of hopin’ right in your face then laughs it away again. Just makes everythin’ you were ever told one damn cruel joke.

[There’s a few moments of nothing of but heavy breathing and snotty snuffles before she starts again, voice forcibly more calm.]

So why don’t all you rat kings and thrill seekers and wannabe white suits give me a new story worth believin' in?

[ it takes him a moment to ask the obvious question. if she wanted to answer it she probably would've just said, but still. she's a kid, sometimes it's better to get facts sorted out first. ]

What happened?

[There's some part of her that honestly didn't think anyone would bother to ask. It keeps her silent for a few long moments.]

Kobra's gone.

Went home?

[ Likeliest answer, but you never know. The name doesn't mean anything to him but he can guess it's someone of hers. Family, friend. He doesn't really know if she's got anyone else. ]

More than just goin' home. [Home and dead meant the same thing in this instance.] He's gone. Only one I had here and now he's gone again.

[Normally she'd save this sort of emotional outburst until she was alone but Kobra had been felt like her only lifeline on the ship and she's too gone herself to reel in it.]

[ So gone, but with nothing to go back to. There's not much you can say to that. ]

What keeps your shadow goin'? Back where you're from.

People give the things that mattered to you to the Witch so she could take your soul. Had to have someone willin' to look out for ya to keep you goin'.

[ Not any superstition he's ever heard of, but it's sort of nice. ]

You got anything to keep?

Just a bandanna he liked.

[Not that it mattered, without the boxes here.]

[ better than nothing; he's used to making do, he has the feeling she is too. Once she gets over the rawness of new grief. ]

Then you got it. Long as you remember him I bet your witch can wait for it.

[She thinks it won't matter when she goes back. Their masks were lost to the desert. Everything else was left in the City. She doubts she'll ever find anything of their's to leave for the Witch.

At least she'd gotten a few months more. Maybe when the hurt wore down, she'd be grateful for that.]

[As reassurances go, it's pretty weak. He can't really tell her things will be all right when chances are they won't; but if she's got something, any old belief to hang onto-- that kind of thing carries you a long way.]

Stayin' away from the city then? Smart move. I don't like the look of the place.

[ Not that he disagrees. ]

Cities are always full on bad. They're lifeless, full of fat cats that think they know what's best.

'sides, I don't trust anything people are giving away for the cheap. They want us to stay, reason enough to get out.

Makes sense.

[ That last bit, it's what bothers him, too. He's trying, here, but it's like a splinter you worry at now and then. ]

Dunno where else we can go, though.

No where, really. Not unless you wanna steal a ship and try takin' off.

[She doesn't much like the idea. As much as she hates it, this place has the machines that might bring her boys back.]

[ Aside from space travel being totally awful in his opinion, he's sick of being on the run. ]

[She sighs.]

Lookin'. Think I'm just gonna head towards the open land. Spent plenty of hours out campin', kinda miss it anyway.

[ Do people even do that here? Daryl's trespassed on plenty of property, it's not really that he cares about the law-- just, she's a kid, she should be a little careful. ]
