Look, I still want to go for peace on this. I don't want to attack these people, they have lost a whole fucking world of shit already. So I am going to ask for something.

I want a story from your past. Something I can share, something that makes you you. Stories were important to them. Past experiences were important to them. It shouldn't give away anything on the ship, just something that is important to the past. Your past. If there is art you can do, a particular talent, something that is creative, give me this. A picture. A recording.

If you're not interested in avoiding a fight, just go do whatever. Lick on a gun barrel for twenty minutes. Warning, they taste bad. But for the ones that want to try? Do me this favor. Avoiding a repeat of Cadacus Primary is why I asked for this job in the first place.

No. It isn't about feeling sorry for us.

It is about balance. Their idea of balance. And their idea of balance is if you touch what is not yours to touch, then it goes to shit. They want us to pay for fucking up their planet in our own blood, it's the only way to restore balance to them.

But if they fuck with us, they fuck with the history of 100 worlds that are not their own. They will be going after people who were never involved. They see past and they see future. If they touch us? All they do is create more shit. These stories are meant to show that we touch the past the same as it touches us. We're a part of all of those worlds.

It really applies anywhere where people put people into types. Black, white, gay, immigrant. A few do something and suddenly everyone is bad. But the family idea is also easier to describe it.

I grew up in a place where there was a lot of hate built up over a long time. One side fighting the other at every excuse, until we got a leader to make us get along. But this leader like his power, and he left no one to take up his cause when he died. He might have been lenient, as far as dictators go. But he was still a dictator and after him people did what they wanted.

And what they wanted to do was go to war. People started invading each other's villages. Tried to be "humane" at first, by killing off only the men that were of fighting age. That is what happened to my brother when I was twelve or thirteen. I watched him lined up in the street with many men, and he was shot down by firing squad. So me and some other kids my age, boys I'd been raised with, we got together and made a unit. We decided we would grow up fast and be a part of the army. We would defend our village.

But people learned, and the sides got worse and worse. One day we go into a nearby town, and everyone had been wiped out. But not just that; they decided to make a point that it did not matter who was children anymore. All sat up against the church wall was fifty children. All of them, much younger than us, with their throats slit and their hands chopped off. Left this as a warning to us. We didn't stop fighting, though. [If anything, they learned about scare tactics, and that's almost worse.]

The rest of my unit is in a mass grave now, same as those children and the priests and my brother and my aunt. I'm the only one who remembers that day. And realizing nothing that could do that, that could want that, has a soul. That was the last day I felt any faith in a religion.

I was raised Catholic. So at one time, a little. The same as you believe in fairies or in monsters in the woods when you are little.

my parents were catholic too. dad was rather casual about it. to him it was enough that dressed nice and went to the church every other sunday or so. moms different story though. you know how some take religion so seriously that its almost scary? that's my mom. shes the type who thinks that evil lurks behind every corner and that youre going to hell for eating sugar and such.

Makes you question stuff a little. But I'm pretty sure there is nothing in us that makes us intrinsically good. It is your choice to be decent or a fuckhole.

In my case, it was my mother who was great. She has a hard life but she loves unconditionally. My father was the prick.

Luckily he's dead.

Besides, you shouldn't assume everyone who manages to hook up is worth something. Sometimes they are there for money, or because they need a place to live, or because someone is very good at pretending they're a different sort of person before they have you.

No, my father died in a drunken bar fight.

My brother didn't even go to war. He was just the right age to be a threat. I was the only one who chose to fight. I was the only one who could.

I am glad he died in stupid way. He did not deserve to be treated as noble or as someone who did something important. All he did was leave people with bad thoughts.
