[Some of the flippant nonchalance in his voice cracks. He goes quiet. This is really hard to admit, and yes, he KNOWS there's a lot going on right now. But it's been beyond him for a long time.]

Kind of. Like you ask "hey are you okay?" and even if he's freaking out he's all "Yeah I'm fine I'm just fine" and then you get a subject change.
