[never before has rey used the video function of her MID on the network. she's happy with relative anonymity, and would prefer to keep herself that way. but drastic times call for drastic measures. or, well, asking for help requires a more personable approach than she's used to. and showing her face is one way to do it.

the video starts out upside-down as she fiddles with the device, but she quickly rights it and after a quick shot of her face (hazel eyes oddly bright, grease smudged across freckled cheeks, more flyaway hairs than usual), she turns the feed to a droid. it's a new model, probably unfamiliar to most of the people from her universe, but still recognizable as an astromech droid.

one of its panels is open, revealing extensive wiring inside. the droid's head swivels back and forth, and every now and then it emits a few beeps and occasionally a low whistle. to anyone good at picking up on inflection, it sounds slightly worried. anyone who knows droidspeak can tell it's saying something along the lines of, "be careful in there." rey's voice comes from behind the camera, and she reaches forward into the wiring with one hand as she holds the MID with the other.]

This came in the... mail for me. I guess they don't just take things from our homes.

Anyone know anything about programming? It's a blank slate. [the droid whistles agian: "my program files are no longer blank."] I've got the basics--the latest generation of droidspeak and its basic functions. But I don't know much about subprograming.

[a beat. she'd really rather do this on her own, but she doesn't want to mess it up. a droid is invaluable here.]

Yeah, sort of like that. [ COMPLETELY DEADPAN. ] Specifically, these tiny little blue birds that are popular globally back on Earth. Pretty much everyone talks with one.

[she's set the mid down and is using both hands to poke around inside the droid now. its head continues to swivel from the device to her, and it occasionally beeps. rey is only half paying attention, but she can still hold a conversation like this.]

On Earth you talk to birds? What's their language like? Two tweets for yes, one for no?

[ he's quiet for the moment she puts the mid down, more out of a watchful curiosity as she returns to messing with the droid than anything else. her question, though, is immediately responded to by a shake of his head and a quick, darting, sheepish smile. ]

It's social media. Twitter. [ beat. ] The logo's a blue bird, and you, [ uh. ], you tweet at other people.

—How's it going?

[social media is a concept foreign to her, i am sorry. but at least she understands that it's a form of communication?? she gives a slight "ah" in acknowledgement. he's caught her at a good time for small talk. she's too distracted by her work to close herself off.]

Rooming isn't the best, but I can eat whatever and whenever I want. There's plenty of water. And the gardens are amazing, like nothing I ever dreamed of. I didn't know there were so many shades of green.

[ he'd meant with the droid, but her response makes him realise that he didn't specify and it takes him a moment to really process what she says. ]

Are you trying to tell me you don't like bunk beds?

[ventifact]

I've never had a bed before. But it's more being so close to other people. I like my privacy.

—What did you sleep on?

[ventifact]

A hammock.

[wallcrawls]

[ oh. ok, that makes sense. ] —Isn't that still kind of a bed?

[ventifact]

I guess. I haven't had a mattress, then.

[wallcrawls]

Well, if you ever end up in the shop for a new one: memory foam is where it's at.

[ but anyway: ] —Anyone able to help you with your programming? There's got to be a few guys on board with the ability, but there's got to be major differences between programming languages between ...uh, planets, right?

[ventifact]

Memory foam? Sounds interesting. I'll keep it in mind.

One or two people, I think. And sort of. It's complicated with droids.
