I guess we've all gotten pretty used to taking matters into our own hands here. And why not? Even if you kill someone, all they're going to do is slap you on the wrist, right? So fine, indescriminate murder is obviously going to be a thing here. Fucking go for it. Life's cheap here.

But I'm not here to talk about that. I'm here to talk about what just happened to Rinzler. People obviously think it's up for debate whether he's sentient or has rights of his own. That's what I saw at his trial. People bringing up the idea of recoding him to solve the problem of the way he acts or the way he thinks. Lucky him for having his creator here, right? We can just reprogram him and make everything better.

Let me tell you something: that's bullshit. You might not like him, you might even think he's dangerous, but he's his own, not yours. And Alan Bradley had no fucking right to go messing around in his coding. Do you hear me, Alan Bradley? You have me to answer to for what you've done.

Making him non-violent would have meant removing his free will or starting over from the ground up. [And either action would have put him on the same level as Clu.] I couldn’t go through with it.

Good. You were skating on pretty fucking thin ice earlier when I thought you'd carried through with it. I know the type that would have done it. And that's not the sort of person anyone wants in charge of sentient life.

[Alan doesn’t say anything in direct response. In truth, it had been more a question of the code than his own will -- if it had been a simple matter of altering a variable or correcting an obvious error, he would have gone through with it. That much he knows. What he’s no longer so sure about is how he feels about that fact now.]

[Exhales slowly.] Good. If I were you, I’d be careful who you tell about this conversation. I’m sure they’ll learn the truth eventually, but… there are a few people who might take the news that I didn’t actually edit him as a reason to fall back on pre-emptive violence again.

[He doesn’t name any names, but it should be clear who he’s talking about.]
