[video] Hell hath no fury like an AI scorned (backdated to 4/30)
[ Tex is angry. Normally she'd send out a text blast, but this is an unusual circumstance, one that leads to her choosing to actually use the video feature on the MID. ]
I guess we've all gotten pretty used to taking matters into our own hands here. And why not? Even if you kill someone, all they're going to do is slap you on the wrist, right? So fine, indescriminate murder is obviously going to be a thing here. Fucking go for it. Life's cheap here.
But I'm not here to talk about that. I'm here to talk about what just happened to Rinzler. People obviously think it's up for debate whether he's sentient or has rights of his own. That's what I saw at his trial. People bringing up the idea of recoding him to solve the problem of the way he acts or the way he thinks. Lucky him for having his creator here, right? We can just reprogram him and make everything better.
Let me tell you something: that's bullshit. You might not like him, you might even think he's dangerous, but he's his own, not yours. And Alan Bradley had no fucking right to go messing around in his coding. Do you hear me, Alan Bradley? You have me to answer to for what you've done.

video; im sorry she talks a lot
She takes a moment to think it over before she replies.] I know... it's hard. And that's why people haven't had an alternative yet, I think. It's possible people are afraid of making another suggestion that won't work. Or maybe they just don't... know.
Like... One idea would be to make a better, controlled environment -- like the hold, but without the horrible conditions, and not with such a small space. Somewhere they can be safe, and others can be safe from them, while people -- who chose to put themselves in possible danger -- figure out where they're coming from and how to best help them. But the problem with that is that sometimes, isolation makes things worse. Sometimes, it's their connections that pull them through to the other side.
And if someone becomes too much of a threat, then there's always the option of killing them -- or, if people don't feel like that's the answer, either... There are those cryo pod things in the medbay, right? There are other options, ones that don't... I mean, it's still a sticky situation. Because those things do still take away some of their choice, since they're not likely to choose to die or be put into stasis. And even therapy can be considered forcing changes on someone's sense of self. But at least therapy would give them the freedom of how they think about what they're being told, you know? So... At least there's that, I guess.
[She's letting herself ramble a bit, but it's on purpose. Maybe acknowledgment that there are all kinds of sides to this will help? Maybe it'll just add more frustration. But she wants to try to address as much as she can.]
audio; shhhh let her rant at him
They shouldn't butt in if they just don't know. You can't think of an idea than let the people who have them do what has to be done. We can't just keep sitting and waiting for something to happen. People have known how dangerous he was for a long time and look what waiting got us.
[He'll ignore that he pushed some of it into happening. The man Rinzler killed wasn't on him and was the real example of what all the waiting caused.]
He's programmed to do things, not to think. That can't be changed by someone with a fancy degree making him stare at ink blots. It has to done by the person who made him. Manually. [At least that's what he's come to understand from talking to Alan and filling in the blanks with his own limited knowledge of technology.] I don't see how this is somehow being called worse than the option to kill him. We tried that, or did you miss that mess? We were called out for that too. No matter what we do it's just not damn good enough for the people here. They just want us to drop it and let him go on killing.
video
I don't think people really want him to run rampant and kill however he wants. I don't know how to make heads or tails of why people are reacting differently to him than they did to what happened before, with the DNA, since... well. I didn't see any of that. But... Just based on what I have seen? I don't think that's really what people want. [She pauses briefly to organize her thoughts.] You're right, I can understand... why you decided to try something different. Something that wasn't killing him. But... That doesn't mean this option was -- necessarily better.
[... but. Now, for the part that's especially important to her. She slows down her speech, and it's clear it's because she's trying to be careful.] I... I can't claim I know everything about how programs work. But, the counseling sessions I've had with Rinzler? They weren't about... ink blots, or anything. I've been trying to figure out what he thinks, how he thinks. How to help him. If that's even something that I can do. But... From what I've seen? I think there's a lot more to him than just... cold programming. He does have emotions. He does have... individuality. So it's... It's not as simple as... what would be -- easiest for everyone to deal with.
video
It was the only option we had. No one else was taking care of it. The people in charge don't care what happens to us, most of the ship doesn't care what happens to the rest of the ship.
[Him included. He would have never gotten involved if Rinzler hadn't brought Wanda into it. Even attacking Peter couldn't shake the teenage's usual apathy for the world at large. But it had been made personal, continues to be personal.]
Not doing something is sometimes a lot like wanting it to happen, you know?
[He listens, a little frustration she's chosen to slow down. It only makes it more difficult for him to comprehend, particularly when he's in such a state where he's losing his control left and right.]
And he chooses to use those emotions as a reason to kill people. I'm not seeing the point here.
