video 04 | Hay Fever

(The feed comes on to Eddie sitting there looking very, very cross. He has a piece of cloth wrapped around his face, covering his nose and mouth, but anyone would be able to recognize him well enough by now. His grey eyes are fierce. Oh yeah. The entire ship is in for it.

He puts his hands up and tips his body to the left side of the screen.)

Nooooooooo Eddie. Mold in space is crazy, Eddie! Why would mold exist in space, Eddie!

(He tips his body to the right side of the screen and crosses his arms over his chest.)

Well guys, I don't know. Because I know how water and bacteria work? Because this isn't the first time I've experienced basic plumbing.

(And back to the left he goes, those hands up in the air now.)

But Eddddddie! You're just being paranoid!! Mold? On a ship! That's dumb!

(And he swivels back to the right.)

OH, I'm sorry. You're right. Why should I not be paranoid in a setting where we have next to nothing on the biological expectations of things like fucking mold?

(Eddie turns his eyes back to the camera, now just looking plain old unimpressed. He raises a finger.)

Not to say I told you so, but I totally told you so. It's kind of super hard to see, but I started having an asthmatic fit in the hall and I was like, wow, this hasn't happened in a while. And then I noticed that it was where one of the pipes had burst. And I was like, huh. Coincidence? Probably not. And guess what buckos? Mold. SPACE MOLD. Because guess what? If humans can exist on a ship, then so can bacteria and stuff like spores. Honestly. I should never listen to anyone.

We have plants here, guys, there's organic material everywhere. There's dinos running everywhere. Probably shitting in the pipes. There's actual shit in the pipes, by the way, at least some of them I assume. Organic. Material. And! On top of that! It's wet! (Wow uh, Eddie really can shriek, can't he?)

So what do we do? You should all wear face masks. Mold can cause a lot of serious health hazards. You can get respiratory infections, which if left untreated, can and WILL kill you! If your throat feels funny, that could be the mold! If your head feels funny, probably the mold! Keep your nose and mouth covered. Make sure your living areas are properly dried out. Gosh. Be careful!

(How does it feel to be parented by a literal twelve year old? Cause that definitely just happened.)

[Whatever the hell that stuff is, it's apparently really dangerous and enough to send another person into a frenzy so it's just smart to ask what it was. Then she can prepare.]

eds, ive got one word for you: space. cheese.

[She doesn't know exactly what that means, yet. That she'll never see him again.]

[Clara sometimes is very concerned about Eddie. This is one of those times. He is way too worked up over space mold. It's adorable in a way one high strung person can appreciate another, but she's careful not to smile so that he doesn't think she's making fun of him. She also tries very hard not to stare, because she's certain she might actually do that and look like she thinks he's crazy.

Which she doesn't. She's just concerned about him freaking out like this.

The end result is her very cautiously side stepping the whole lecture-fit and going for a diversion.]

If you'd like a guaranteed mold-free space to sit in, I could use some help with a project I'm working on.

(Um yeah have you ever wondered the exact pitch a siren hits? It's probably this one as Eddie shrieks:)

(No wonder she can hear them from next door all the time.)

First of all, I need to never hang out with you and Richie at the same time. I think I'd die from cheesiness. (Which may or may not also be a pun.) Second of all- does your face really hurt?

Uh, yeah.

(Eddie is pretty positive this is a question. Even if it isn't, she's getting an explanation anyway!)

I don't know too much about the total breakdown of what mold is, since there's different types, but I know the basics at least. Mold is usually what happens if you leave food out and it sits for a long time, you'll eventually see fuzzy stuff growing on it, and it'll smell awful. That's a type of mold. And if you eat it, you can get really sick or die.

(Which, despite his hypochondria, is actually true.)

But the mold we're dealing with here comes from this stuff called spores. Spores are like little itty bitty things that float around in the air, and then they take hold of places like wet spots and grow and can make the air reeeeally toxic to breathe. Like with black mold. It's pretty dangerous since you can't always see it's there, but I have pretty sensitive lungs. You're best off keeping your face covered- at least in the halls where all the pipes are. And even then....

(He's talking quickly, but at least he's talking clearly. He is very fine with educating the masses on the dangers of mold.)

And soooome people insinuated that space can't have mold because it's too sterile or nothing can grow- I don't know. Either way, it was bullshit, and now we have mold.

I have one for you: no.

(Eddie instinctively wants to argue because mold is pretty God damn dangerous, Beverly.

But the latter is pretty important too. Even though it's been a while now. Eddie feels a little uncomfortable.)

Do you want to talk about it or something?

(Thing is Eddie knows enough about this place to realize people just left sometimes. And sometimes would come back and have no clue about being there before.)

(There are valid reasons to be very concerned about Eddie. There are times where it is evident that Eddie could potentially benefit from some professional help, so to speak. For now, Eddie is mostly concerned with the safety of his friends.

And also maybe feeling a teensy bit smug about being right.

A diversion is a pretty clever tactic, all things considered. He peers are her from over his makeshift mask.)

...How do you know it's guaranteed mold-free?

Because the Doctor and I made sure our quarters were perfectly safe. Free from risk of most fires, vermin, flooding, and mold.

[Because Clara is picky af about where she lives because surprise she's high strung too.]

How did you manage to do that?

(A genuine question. It would be good to know for his own living quarters. If he could keep his friends safe from mold, and all the other sorts of dangers like that, he would in a heartbeat.)

The Doctor's a lot more useful than he looks.

That, and this end of the living units seems to be safe from most things. Probably because they were the original living quarters so they've been safeguarded a bit better than the other areas people are staying in.

I like the Doctor a lot. He's really funny.

(He also doesn't really talk to Eddie with a bunch of bullshit. Neither did Clara.)

Chemistry was supposed to be pretty safe. (His nose wrinkles up, and he's rolling his eyes.) But so much for that.

yeah. I do.

He wasn't there, when I saw us all together again. What if we never see him again? We're all supposed to come back, but he wasn't there.

[It's been eating at her, and she's had a hard time trying to put it into words. She probably should have spoken to them about it before but how?

But if Stan wasn't there, when they reunite... Maybe- no. No. That was exactly why Eddie dies. It wanted them divided.

Maybe they weren't going to win next time.]

[And then her heart melted because the Doctor with kids is always her favorite thing ever. ]

Well, I've got room in my perfectly safe unit for you, if you'd ever like to stick around.

[It's casually slipped in there. But she's made a little room for any kids that need a safe place to crash, since she and the Doctor aren't around every night in between work and insomnia. ]

(Oh. It sinks into Eddie that Beverly didn't know. He doesn't know why he had thought she had known.)

Hey, where are you?

(He doesn't really like text, and especially not for a talk like this.)

riding back to the room.

(Could anyone even blame her? The Doctor was really good with the boys. He even was good with Richie.)

Could the others come if they wanted?

(Because separating Eddie from the Losers was like separating him from his own arms. A part of him...actually sounds quietly hopeful, if only because...Well. He's twelve. Eddie sometimes missed his mother very badly. Not so much because she was his mother, but because he was used to having an adult around who could fix things when everything went to hell. He had mistrust of adults, but at the same time, he was just young enough that sometimes he felt anxious being on his own.

Maybe it wasn't a permanent offer. But all the same, he wants to know if it was just for him or not.)

Okay. I'll wait in your room for you.

[A few minutes later, Bev's hopping off her bike just as she gets to their room, and moves through the common space to her room. Her room's got a few tapestries on the wall, and there're a couple of books spread about. She was still working on decorating it, slowly but surely.

By the time she opens the door to the room, Marvin has moved from his resting spot on Beverly's pillow to come check Eddie out. He chirps at him good naturally, having long since recognized him as a friend.]

Hey.

[She takes her bag off her shoulder, and tosses it into the corner.]

Course they can. My door's always open if any of you need me.

[She's in an odd place with the children here, headmaster and teacher but also a caregiver. She knows it's a little unique, and she wouldn't blame them for not wanting to be around her in their off time. She can't be their mother, and she doesn't want to necessarily try to be for all of them, but she knows that in a lot of ways they need her to step up and do more.]

(Eddie had taken to gently petting Marvin. His own unnamed dinosaur was sleeping in a box nest in their room. He's not very worried about Teddie causing any problems, since his own dino is bigger anyway. That and Teddie seemed used enough to Eddie's to not bother trying anything.)

Hi.

(He smiles briefly at Beverly, though he's feeling a little anxious. He has no idea how to even start with this.)

So like, first of all. Apparently on this ship people vanish a lot? Like they'll just go back to their worlds. And sometimes they come back and don't remember being here before. And it's...not really in anyone's control.

(Eddie wasn't so sure how all his friends felt explicitly about Clara. Clara had been there the most for Eddie, mostly because of their prior connections and the certain conversations they had had. He felt a little childishly possessive of her in that way, but his love for his friends swathed over that feeling and made him want them to have a safe place too.)

Okay, cool. Cause I don't really sleep well without Richie or Bill around anymore. (He confesses this to her simply. They...They were all pretty desperate to make sure the others were safe and near.)

I'd say we should all- I don't know. Make a home together. But I know that's kind of weird...and I don't know if we could leave our wall.

That's... Thank you for telling me. I figured we just weren't running into each other- this place is so big and there's not really day and night in space. But this was going on for too long.

[Unfortunately, a first of all meant that there was a second of all. She sits next to Eddie, Marvin in between them.] What's the second of all?
