I really like birds. My favorite is the evening grosbeak male but the female is pretty cool too.

One of my friends is teaching me how to make bird sounds but I really suck at it and I'm still trying to do the first one she showed me. I'm better at bird watching.

What's your favorite animal? Do you have a hobby you that's related to them?

That's another thing I love about birds. It's a whole thing.

[ He smiles at her when she replies, always happy to talk to her despite himself lately. ]

At first it was the coloring... I really like those shades a lot. But I like their calls too. It's a good sound. You can find them even in winter most of the time... they like to stay together in big flocks.

So they are like you and your friends.

[She finds the connection there and smiles, because she thinks it's a nice thought.]

I never thought about it that way.

[She downright beams at that, because she feels proud of herself for pointing out something he hadn't thought of yet. She still feels years behind Stan and the other kids here, and it's nice to be insightful once in a while.]

Turtle doves are good birds too. A nurse at Transigen told me stories about them.

[There's some shuffling as she reaches around for something, then holds up some papers that are folded in half to be secret. His name is written on the front.]

I drew birds. For you.

[There's an awkward pause, in case he didn't pick up on that fact from his name being on the paper.]

What do you know of them?

[ Stan knows about turtle doves but he likes to hear Laura talk and share stories with him. He watches as she shuffles around in the feed, tilitng his head when she holds up papers. He's curious and a bit surprised. ]

Really?

[ There's genuine excitement about the fact. ]
