❧ 002 [video]

[When the TAB first flickers to life, all that's visible is an intricately scarred cheek with just the slightest peek of ivory fangs past blue lips. There's the faint sound of something shifting about and finally, Kurt comes into full view.

He's sitting on the edge of an old stone fountain, his tail swishing back and forth behind him, a grin plastered across his face.]
I know very little about this holiday, but I've read a few things in an attempt to try and understand better.

[Meaning that he has forgone all the really romantic and couple-esque things about 'Valentine's Day' or whatever they would be calling it on Thisavrou.]

Giving chocolate to someone you like is traditional and I have more than a few friends and other people that I enjoy being around, so ... [He reaches over to pick up a small black box and pops the lid off of it, revealing the candy inside.]

Who wants some chocolate? [A soft laugh follows shortly after his inquiry as he replaces the lid and clutches the box to his chest, smile somehow broadening.]

I'm more than willing to deliver it, too.

(ooc: cw for anyone that decides to read the thread with kurt and j. [mentions of self-harm, internalized transphobia and ... self-loathing?])

'In one piece'? What, you expected me to get dismembered en route?

[He's obviously joking. That totally isn't a concern around here. ... Right? He accepts the box of chocolates and hesitates for a moment.]

Hey, ah... thanks. [It still doesn't come easily to him, thanking people. After so long spent fending for himself, it's still weird to rely on or even accept things from others, most of the time. He's working on it.

[He pops open the box and selects one of the chocolates. tossing it up in the air and catching it expertly in his mouth.]

Hm! A+ chocolates, and at my favorite price: free. [He closes the box and tucks it under his arm; no sense eating them all at once, after all. He regards Kurt a moment, taking in his unusual eyes and kind of marveling again at that blue skin. He's not exactly staring, he isn't trying to be rude, he's just honestly kind of intrigued.] So tell me, Kurt, how long have you been here? Any vital advice for a newcomer?

Heh, no, I guess that wouldn't do at all, now would it? [He's never been a fan of getting injured, despite being somewhat good at it. He grins then.] Hey, if you wind up with extra nobody's gonna eat, I'll gladly take one for the team. Aren't you gonna have any, though?

[Oh, he saw the tail, and it's definitely the most unusual and interesting thing he's seen since he got here. Sure, the savrii are unusual, but there's always been something a little extra interesting about somoene who looks mostly human except for this, that, and the other thing. He's terribly curious--is Kurt an alien of some sort, or is he human but with... an extraordinary situation in his past? He doesn't want to be rude, though. Kurt's the first person he's met face to face, and it's true that sticking together is never a bad idea. At least when the people you're potentially sticking to aren't, you know, horrible murderers and such, like he's done in the past. Oops.

[He gives Kurt a smile and a nod.]

At this point, I'm willing to say most information is pretty vital, seeing as how I just got here. I mean, I've got the TAB and all, but no matter how good your map is, it's always a little disorienting when you first show up somewhere.

Where ya from? I mean, like back home. I used to travel a lot, for work, so I wonder if maybe I ever visited your hometown.

[He snorts a laugh when Kurt admits he's already eaten a box.] Well, it is pretty good chocolate. [No judgment here. This guy would eat ice cream three meals a day if he could.

[He shakes his head then, and gestures toward a bench where they can sit and chat.]

Nah, two planets is no big deal. I traveled to a whole bunch of different worlds back home. [He sits down and threads his hands together behind his head, the box of chocolate resting in his lap.] When I was a kid, I didn't even know there were other worlds, but now? I've been do like... I dunno, over a dozen, probably.

[He frowns a little at the way Kurt pauses then, feeling like he sort of understands what wasn't said.] I've heard of New York, but I never went there, myself. Heard of Germany, too, but never made it there, either. Had some German chocolate cake, once, but I dunno if that counts for anything.

I grew up in a place called Radiant Garden, but... I'd be pretty surprised if anybody here had heard of it. It's pretty small.

[Kurt, you're in good company. If Lea doesn't find an ice cream shop soon, he might just go crazy. He quirks his mouth in thought then.]

Mm, something like that. I guess you could say I was a... field investigator? [That's about he most innocuous way to put it, anyway.] My job was mostly to check out new locations and gather info on certain places and people. And yeah, I did a lot of travel between worlds. Planets, I guess, a lot of people call 'em? Not so much with crashing, usually, though. [He's not going to try and explain that you can't crash a Corridor of Darkness, really.]

I'll add New York to my list of places to check out next time I'm free, for sure. I like big cities--there's always something exciting going on there, you know? I spent some time in London, love that big clock they have there. Too bad it's usually raining, so the sunset's hard to fully appreciate.

[Lea gives a small chuff of a laugh then, and there's something a little bitter in it.]

It was a really nice place to live, when I was a kid, but... well, a lot of stuff's happened. The whole world was almost completely destroyed at one point. The Restoration Committee has been doing a lot of work to try and fix things up, but I think it'll be a while before it really looks anything like it used to.

[Kurt, you might just be BFF material.]

I can't disagree with ya there. [Even if he came to hate the Organization for what they had done--what Xehanort had done--he can't deny that the job was interesting.] Most of the time I had pretty strict orders to keep out of sight, but... [He gives him a conspiratorial grin.] Well, I didn't always follow the rules. I've met a gladiator, a genie, even had a conversation with a caterpillar once. [True story.] One time, I even crossed blades with a pirate.

[Well. Sort of. More like the pirate had been shooting cannonballs at him from afar while he and Roxas had fought a giant flying Heartless, but... swashbuckling is easier to explain.

[He shakes his head then, impulsively reaching over and ruffling Kurt's hair before he really thinks better of it. Er... he hopes that isn't a rude invasion of personal space; old habits die hard.]
Don't apologize, que será, será, right? [He hefts a bit of a sigh.] I'm sure it'll get back to normal eventually. [He has to smile a little at Kurt's accent.] Yeah, they're... pretty 'goot'. [He didn't know all of the members of the current Restoration Committee, and the ones he did know he didn't know well, but maybe one day he'll get to. One day, when Xehanort is finally defeated, when he can finally go home knowing he was a part of the solution, rather than part of the problem.]

[Strict? Kid you dunno the half of it. But tragic backstories are for another day. He's about to elaborate on the caterpillar when Kurt latches onto the pirate story, and Lea can't help but laugh. He's not sure he's seen anybody so enthused about something since he told Roxas he could kill some time just flying around Never Land.]

Yup! The real deal. Had a hook for a hand and everything. [He rubs his chin in thought.] The fight didn't last terribly long, though. Mostly he was shooting cannonballs at us, but my pal and I, we finally managed to get the better of him. [More or less. Peter Pan helped, but... Kurt doesn't need to know that part. Let Lea just feel a little cooler than he really is, just this once.

[He hums in thought then, and gives a slightly uncertain nod.]

Think so. Admittedly I'm not actually sure what the sayings mean in their original languages, I just know they're what'cha say when you wanna say 'that's the way the cookie crumbles', but sound more educated. [He laughs a little.] People seem more impressed when you say something in another language.

[When Kurt brings up the idea of someone else from home turning up here, Lea can't help but feel a pang of loneliness. He had mostly tried not to think about how separated he was here, but he had known that wouldn't last long anyway. Even though he always knew Roxas would be out of reach after returning to Sora, he had sort of liked the idea of maybe palling around with Riku and the rest of them. He'd barely gotten the chance to get to know them before he'd wound up here--what would they think when they discovered he'd just bailed on them?

[He blows out a soft sigh and gives Kurt a smile, though it's a bit forced this time.]

That'd be kind of cool, but... I dunno, most of the folks I know from home, they've got important stuff they should be doing there. [He does, too, for that matter, but he can't go back now, in any case.] It'd be nice to see them again, but... I'm not gonna wish for that. That'd be a little too selfish, I think. [And really, that's the thing he needs to work on more than anything else.]

[personal profile] promises_to_keep 2017-03-07 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
[Lea taps his chin in thought, squinting one eye.] Mm, no, I think he still had both legs. Rats, so I guess that only makes him like... 96% authentic pirate then, huh? [He preens a little.] Heh, well, I've had a lot of practice. My buddy--ah, Roxas, was his name--he was just kind of a natural, you know? Picked stuff up [He snaps his fingers] like that. Me, though, I became a badass the old-fashioned way: making an idiot of myself for many years 'til I got it right.

[He snorts a laugh.] True. And then there are also the people who look smart... until they do speak. Spanish, though, huh? [He looks thoughtful for a moment.] Well, it's in a song I heard when I was in London one time, they were playing it in an old record shop. How did it go... [He hums to himself, a little off-key, he can't quite recall the tune.] Whatever will be, will be, I think it goes, after that. Maybe that's what it means. Same general idea as the rest, so it makes sense to me.

[For what it's worth, Lea isn't upset at Kurt for those moments of tense silence; he raises perfectly reasonable points. It isn't Kurt's fault Lea's carrying around all this baggage. When Kurt lowers his eyes and speaks kind of quietly, though, Lea waves his hands.]

Ah-- No, you don't gotta be sorry, you didn't say anything wrong. I'd be lyin' if I said I hadn't thought about what it'd be like if my friends showed up here, too, you know? It'd be nice to just take a vacation from all the crap going on back home, but... [He shakes his head.] I couldn't, in good conscience, make a wish like that. [He grins a little and taps his temple.] And I'm making a concerted effort toward that good conscience thing.

[Let's be honest, he was as lousy at being a bad guy as he was at being honest, back in the day, but he's trying, okay?]

[Lea can't help but let out a soft chuckle tinged with something like regret at Kurt's comment.]

Heh, yeah, he was a pretty smart cookie. [The subsequent laughter is more sincere.] Yeah, yeah, I know, practice makes perfect, and all. I still say it was mostly me makin' an ass of myself, most of the time. Once I even completely burned my eyebrows off. Got made fun of for like a month.

[He pulls the TAB out of his pocket and turns it in his hand then.] Ah, right, I forgot these things can search for info and such. Maybe I can find it--guess I'll let'cha know.

[He looks a little embarrassed then, rubbing the back of his neck. He is making the effort, but he's not really used to anyone paying attention to it or giving him the benefit of the doubt. Not that he can blame Riku and Donald and the others for their hesitance to just blindly trust him, but it's a little nice to have someone acknowledge the effort, even if Kurt is mostly just taking his word for it.]

Well, I made a lot of mistakes in the past, so... I guess I'm making a double effort to avoid making those same sorts'a mistakes again, you know? [Another chuckle.] So that's... me having made an ass of myself again, learning from my mistakes.

[Yeah, past tense, but... hopefully that's just temporary. Maybe. Lea still isn't quite sure exactly how they might be able to extract Roxas and Naminé from Sora and Kairi, let alone how to get them their own bodies again (where did their original bodies go in the first place? Did they just... become insubstantial? He really has no idea how this heart sharing phenomenon even works. We're not even sure Nomura knows.), but he's confident that they'll be able to figure something out. They have to... right?

[Maybe he'll try to explain this to Kurt one day, but not just yet. You have to be at least a Level Three friend to access that part of his backstory. Instead he just laughs brightly at Kurt's question.]

How? You want me to show you? [He pushes his sleeves up, though it's just for show, and then holds up one hand, fingers splayed dramatically and palm skyward. He pauses for just a second, glances at Kurt to make sure he's watching, and then calls a small tongue of flame to his hand. It's just big enough to look cool, maybe thrice the size of the flame from a flick lighter, resting comfortably in his palm, flickering away.] Granted, when I first learned how to do this, I sucked at it... [He rolls his wrist and lets the flame skirt to the back of his hand instead, dancing across his knuckles, and then lifts his index and middle fingers so it sits neatly at their tips, sort of ala a smoking gun.] Don't try it at home, kids, [he says as if he's speaking to a studio audience, and then blows the flame out and gestures at his face.] When I was first figuring out how to control it, I put way too much power into the flames, so they literally blew up in my face a few times.

[He snickers softly.] So I can definitely give myself credit for learning pretty quickly from that mistake, in any case.

[Technically he never lost the organ--he still had blood and stuff--but the loss of the ethereal heart seems no less devastating, all things considered.

[He grins at Kurt's reaction. It's always a little refreshing to see somebody react to this sort of thing for the first time. After they know you can do it, it's never as genuinely amazing to them in the future. When Kurt lifts his hand as if to touch the flame, though, Lea recoils quickly, though apparently not quickly enough to prevent a little exclamation from Kurt.]

Well of course it's hot, you lunkhead, [he says, though not indictingly.] Are you okay? [He's laughing a little, but only because Kurt didn't manage to actually hurt himself.] Metahuman? [He's not familiar with the term, but he can parse what it means, for the most part.] Mm, magic is something I think just about anybody can do, back home, you just need training. I had no idea I could do this sort of thing until after I... uh... [Joined the mafia?] Well, I met some people who could do this sort of thing--control ice, control earth--and they helped me kind of figure out how things worked. Not enough to prevent me from burning my eyebrows off, but I guess it's better than nothing.

A lot of places I visited, people thought magic was a bunch of hooey, but I mean... I'm just a normal guy, so far as I know. [He shrugs.] I think anybody can do it, with the right training and such. [He might have had a bit of an advantage, seeing as how the whole Organization seemed to suddenly acquire impressive abilities upon the loss of their hearts, but Riku could do magic, and he'd never lost his heart. Donald, too, though he's not sure if being a talking duck has anything to do with that...]

[Lea is always happy to set some shit on fire.

[He gives a nod then, looking contemplative.]
Yeah, I mean... I think some people have a predilection toward certain types of magic and such... Like me, Fire is my game. I can cast other spells fairly well--Thunder, Aero--but certain types I just suck at. Don't ask me to demonstrate any ice-based magic, all you'll get is maybe a cold breeze and a puddle. But so far as I can tell, anybody has the potential. Not sure if that's limited to just the places I happen to have been to, though.

I could try. [He really wouldn't mind trying to teach Kurt magic; he's been a mentor/tutor before, and he kind of really enjoyed it. Doing something like that now, outside of the Organization's control, might actually be kind of fun. He gives a nod then.] Mm, like me, they could all cast other magic, too, but they kind of specialized in certain areas. Not always just elemental, either--one guy I knew was a wiz at casting illusions. Could make ya believe just about anything. It was kind of horrifying, honestly--he was one guy I always made an effort to try not to piss off.

[Don't trust talking ducks, Kurt, they never heal you when you need it. =__=]

No harm at all, I'd say. Just try not to blow me up or anything. [He's mostly joking. That only happened once.] Just lemme know when you're free sometime, and we'll see what shakes out.

[He accepts the fruit snack with an appreciative nod, sort of squishing it between two fingers experimentally before popping it into his mouth and making a pleased noise. Ooh, apple! He gives a nod then, his expression apprehensive.]

Yeah, no kidding. I always did my best to keep anything deep and dark away from that guy, but it really didn't make him any less menacing. [In theory, Ienzo still has that capability, too, in the same way Lea can still wield Axel's fire... Best not ever let Ienzo know he does actually feel a little guilty for having, you know, killed him horribly and all.

[He shifts a little where he sits and regards Kurt a moment.]

So... I have to ask... are you a 'metahuman', or something of the like, like you mentioned? I gotta admit, I've never met a blue guy with a tail before. [He wags a finger, grinning.] It's a pretty cool tail, for the record.
