[Despite having been on the Moira for a number of months now- not to mention the year that seemed to flash past in the blink of an eye- Evie is only now making her first public broadcast to the network. She looks somewhat subdued, settled in the library in her own clothes with the hood of her overcoat cast back from her face and a small pile of books scattered around her. They appear to be volumes on world history.
She looks at the camera on her MID and smiles awkwardly.]
A quick question, if it's not too much trouble. I don't suppose there's a right answer but I'm curious. Considering how we are all out of our own space and time aboard this ship, how exactly should we treat anniversaries? Births, deaths, marriages and the like... do you think it's best to just continue with the totals as normal or would you add on the years that have passed since the day you left your own homes to today's date?
And secondly, can someone direct me to somewhere that has candles? Today should be my brother's birthday and -
[She stops herself from saying something else. How it's the... twenty second? Twenty third? Several hundreds and twenty third? anniversary of their mother's death too, but no one wants to hear that.]
Well. I would feel it would be breaking the habit of a lifetime not to mark the occasion somehow, even without him being here.
Thank you.

idk why humans do it every year though that sounds like a waste of time

Does age not mean anything to your society?

VOICE
[That part was easy — there's a pause before she considers the other question.]
As for the years, if it's a serious gap? I'd say it's easiest to count what you've lived, what you've experienced.
[There's a another beat, shorter this time, and a chagrined:]
That said, I don't actually know what year it's considered to be in this universe, on-board the Moira.
VOICE
[Not that she's a believer, but she's well read and some of those ages are pushing it.]
I can't imagine my brother being several hundred years old. He's only just managing to pass as an adult.

'Sides, you didn't lose some days gettin' here?

[But then she frowns a little.]
Why would there be free cake?

video;
... how did you-?
And that still doesn't explain why there should be cake. Gifts I can understand, but people are under no obligation to give someone cake.

But birthday cake is the best part of turning a year older. Gifts might suck, but it's hard to mess up cake.
