[never before has rey used the video function of her MID on the network. she's happy with relative anonymity, and would prefer to keep herself that way. but drastic times call for drastic measures. or, well, asking for help requires a more personable approach than she's used to. and showing her face is one way to do it.

the video starts out upside-down as she fiddles with the device, but she quickly rights it and after a quick shot of her face (hazel eyes oddly bright, grease smudged across freckled cheeks, more flyaway hairs than usual), she turns the feed to a droid. it's a new model, probably unfamiliar to most of the people from her universe, but still recognizable as an astromech droid.

one of its panels is open, revealing extensive wiring inside. the droid's head swivels back and forth, and every now and then it emits a few beeps and occasionally a low whistle. to anyone good at picking up on inflection, it sounds slightly worried. anyone who knows droidspeak can tell it's saying something along the lines of, "be careful in there." rey's voice comes from behind the camera, and she reaches forward into the wiring with one hand as she holds the MID with the other.]

This came in the... mail for me. I guess they don't just take things from our homes.

Anyone know anything about programming? It's a blank slate. [the droid whistles agian: "my program files are no longer blank."] I've got the basics--the latest generation of droidspeak and its basic functions. But I don't know much about subprograming.

[a beat. she'd really rather do this on her own, but she doesn't want to mess it up. a droid is invaluable here.]

What does he need to be able to do?

[ Kobra thinks back to the things he has made or programmed and they're usually pretty straight-forward and he has a feeling that she wants something more complicated than he's used to, but he'll at least give it a try. ]

Work on starships, mostly. Carry messages if I need it to. Practical things.

[ Kobra heads straight there instead of answering, knocking with excitement and then standing casually and leaning against the wall with his hip cocked. Smooth as ever. ]

[All Rey can think is, that was fast. At least, she assumes it's Kobra since she hadn't invited anyone else up to her room. Wiping her hands on her pants, Rey moves towards the door to open it, still cautious even though she'd been expecting him.]

[ He grins, probably a little more flirty than is really warranted for this particular house call. ]

I heard you had a droid in need of some programming.

[Don't worry, Rey doesn't pick up on any flirty vibes. Instead, she gives him a very direct, slightly squinting stare.]

Yeah. I just told you that a few minutes ago.

Yeah you did.

[ He tries to grin, but it kind of fails and turns into a giggle as he pushes off of the wall.. ]

Wanna let me take a look?

[He is strange. This is the conclusion Rey draws from their first few moments of meeting one another in real life. But strange doesn't always mean bad. She steps back from the door to allow him entry. BB-9 sits perfectly still in the middle of the room until she swivels her head to face him. A short beep is her greeting.]

This is BB-9.

[ He steps in and kneels next to the little droid. ]

Hey, little guy. I'm Kobra. I'm just gonna see if we can't get you workin' a little better.

[ There's a warmth to his voice that most people reserve for children and baby animals, like he cares about the droid's feelings, and he holds out a tentative hand to touch BB-9. ]

[While Rey appreciates the gesture, the droid doesn't seem to take notice. Without subprogramming, all she's capable of is basic functions. A fully programmed droid would take note of the tone of his voice and react accordingly based on its personality settings. But BB-9 simply sits motionless, waiting for instruction.

Rey, meanwhile is just a little amused.]

She won't roll away. She isn't programmed for self-preservation yet.

Neither are a lotta people.

[ Kobra grins up at her before turning back to BB-9. ]

[ He taps his finger lightly on what looks like a little console access. ]

[Rey crouches beside him, partially to be more involved and partially because she doesn't want him poking around in her droid's programming without knowing what he's doing. Rey doesn't answer, instead letting BB-9 pop open her own panel for him. It is, conveniently, a programming console.]

She's already got the basics, like I said. She just needs some subprograms.

She seems real advanced. Enough for face recognition. Wonder if we could connect her to the MIDs so she could have an easier time delivering things.

[ What he's leaving out is that delivering things is his job and that if she's doing it, he can slack off even more. ]
