(With all of his encounters so far, the last thing he expects to see is a girl almost his exact age staring back at him. People said there were kids but so far, he'd mostly met teenagers. Not kids.

What quiets him, stills his raspy, stuttering breaths, is her seemingly immobile conviction that she will protect him.)

(Except he...somehow believes her. Believes her more than the adults who told them that they would keep him safe, believes her more on account of that natural, intrinsic trust of another child.)

...Why? (They didn't even know each other. Shouldn't she worry about protecting herself?)
