I.

I'm not asking for anyone's help making this decision, but I've got a big one that dropped in my lap, and I'm thinking about the whole process now. You know—dealing with the whole 'this is going to affect me for the rest of my life' thing.

It's not fun.

I think I know what I'm going to do, but pulling the trigger, so to speak...it sucks.

II.

[ Several minutes later, a for sale ad is sent out from Tex's network address: ]

For sale:

2 android-style robots. These are empty shells without any sort of intelligence included.

1 suit of Freelancer armor. Cobalt blue. Sniper rifle not included.

Prices on these items are negotiable. Please make a reasonable offer.

If I have it around it's just going to be a reminder of what I can't have.

And I don't see why I shouldn't sell them when there's no intelligence programmed in. Maybe there's someone like me who's stuck in a human body and doesn't want to be.

But after half a micro, an encrypted feed opens in answer to Tex's post. No words. Just Rinzler, headtilting at the screen.

It's probably not hard to interpret what he's asking.]

[ She flips on the video to respond in kind, looking reticent. She has a feeling Rinzler isn't going to approve of her decision. ]

I'm not going to need it from now on, that's all. And I don't see the point in having it around if I'm not going to use it.

[The video answers one question, at least. Her user shell's still functioning. But if that's the case...]

Transfer functions damaged?

Sort of. My organic body is taking the transfers with more difficulty every time. [ She shrugs a little. ] See, organic bodies don't run well without an intelligence to regulate their functions. So every time I leave the body, I put it into a coma, and it fucks everything up. I can't keep doing it.

[Noise skips, just a little, but there's a pause before Rinzler types back.]

User body: glitched.

[Why get rid of her own?]

Yeah. You're not wrong.

[ She frowns a little, looking slightly off to the side. ]

I like some things about being in a user body, is all, Rinzler. I know it's not ideal.

Tex, are you sure about this?

[ Seriously, there hadn't been that much time since their conversation. ]

Would I be doing this if I wasn't sure?

Weaker. Slower. Self-degrading. [And, apparently...] Fails to support code transfers.

[It's her shell. Her decision. But liking or not, Rinzler doesn't understand at all how any program with her function and her skills could manage to run permanently in that.]

Goddammit, I know. I know, okay?

[ She's struggling with the decision all over again now. And it just comes down to the pleasures of the flesh vis a vis the strengths of her robot.

She frowns, biting the edge of her lip. ]

If I wasn't with my boyfriend, I'd probably stick with the robot.

I'm afraid ... yes.

[ There's a bit of a gap before she responds again. Rinzler has her all mixed up again. ]

Look. If I have it in the house, I'm going to use it. That's all there is to it.

What if you put it under someone protection, while you tried out what it means not to have ready access to it?

I suppose you aren't interested in my offer on them.

You mean like, I could arrange in advance to use it on occasion?

I have the pretty distinct idea that you don't want Church's stuff around. And you don't want me using my robot. So why would you buy them?

That would be your choice.

More immediate, you wouldn't have knee-jerk access to it, but at the same time you won't have completely burned your options, without being absolutely sure, this is the route you want to go.

[For all that Rinzler never shows his face, he's not particularly subtle. It's easy to see the momentary pause as he registers Tex's reasons... and to hear the stutter, right after, as he represses a really? Of course users interface, the same as programs. Rinzler's even aware of the basic differences in how, though her preference for biology continues to elude him.

But Rinzler is a weapon, Rinzler is his code. And preference or no, the concept of rating any kind of pleasure over what he is, over being able to fight and win and move like he was made to...

He shakes his head.]

Not a user.

My offer is to pay for their storage.

[But given the direction her conversation with Adrien seems to be heading in, it might be preferable to let him store them; he's a more neutral party, and one who thinks jumping back and forth between the bodies is risky, which is L's objection.]

No, you're right. I'm not a user.

[ The fact that this relationship clouds her decision-making process so thoroughly is frustrating as hell. If she didn't have Ryuuzaki in her life, choosing to remain in her robot would be a trivial decision. She'd donate her body to science, or something, and just give in to her AI abilities.

She sighs. ]

I'm at least going to sell the spare body and the armor. I don't need them anymore.

Are you offering to be its keeper, then?

[ Uhm.

Not exactly where he'd been going with this but ... ]
