Actually, in a rare expression of my paranoia losing out to my level of fucks to give, I did approach the captains with some questions.

They didn't appear to have any explanations but they did say they would support an effort to get sort this out and if we needed resources, people shouldn't worry about taking time off from their assigned jobs to help.
