Oct. 17th, Early Morning; AUDIO;

[The power going out on a spaceship was never a good thing. Ratchet’s last two mid-ship power outages had gone about as bad as they could go, so the sudden silence before the backup generator kicks in doesn’t go unnoticed...even from a dead sleep. Ratchet sits up, doesn’t so much as breath for the moment while he listens. Familiarity with being on ships in space makes the utter silence paint a clear picture. Spaceships are never this quiet, and never this dark. Not unless something’s wrong.

He looks down at his MID, holding up up the wrong wrist before correcting himself; hard habit to break. The dim display shows that it’s early in the ship’s circadian cycle. A lot of people were probably still sleeping, some of them with no idea what had happened. There’s a distant whirring sound as the backup generators come on, some of the ship’s smaller sound and lights coming back to life. It’s only as Ratchet nearly trips out of bed and is fumbling for a proper light (sorry if you’re sleeping, roomie) that the message from the captains comes through, telling them not to worry.

Which only makes him more worried.

He sends out his own message on the network not long later.]

I hate to second guess the captains, but I’m not used to the power just going out on on a ship this size when we’re out in the middle of nowhere.

[Those other two times had been unique circumstances, obviously.]

Was anyone on the bridge when it happened? Engines? Observation deck? Does anyone know what happened at all?

[ Peridot was awake for it, of course. Awake and wandering about, because gems don't need to sleep and the idea of sitting in her room for hours on end without doing something seems idiotic to her.

She sounds shaken when she speaks up, her usual arrogant tone undercut by fear. ]

I was on the observation deck. It... I've never seen anything like it!

[ Of course Peridot hasn't seen the likes of many things before, even things that are mundane by most people's standards, so it's probably best to just take what she says well salted. Right? ]

Yes! Everything was crackling and, and glowing purple! What kind of storm glows purple!?

[ She's piloted a spaceship before but this just seemed majorly abnormal to her. ]

A... Solar storm...?

[ Cue the sounds of scuffling and beeping as she gets her screen out to look up these 'solar storms', which, now that he mentions them by that name, not only has she heard of them, she's seen them. ]

...Oh.

...In my defense, I know what solar storms are. I've just never seen a purple one before.

What I don't get is how it managed to knock out the power to the whole ship. That strikes me as concerning.

For once, I agree with you. If we were just allowed to know a little bit more about the ship's origins and construction, I could get this hunk of junk properly up to scratch. Maybe give it some radiation shielding that would keep a simple solar storm from knocking out the power.

At least the generators are keeping the refrigeration units going.

Do you guys need any help?

[She's used to having to do basically all the heavy thinking back in Defiance. That there are other people throwing their weight into the scientific work here is a good sign, but she doesn't always know what to do with herself.]

Don't worry, if they ever break down I'll make sure to bring you a cigar as we celebrate the birth of a bacteria vat in med bay.

You're right, though. If this ship was made to withstand atmospheric re-entry on most worlds, then a little solar storm shouldn't be such a rough ride.

Maybe it's the sort of storm that these shields aren't made to stop at all.

This ship has access to universes worth of unidentifiable phenomena and we don't know which ones it's prepared for and which ones it showed up late to and in inappropriate dress.

But maybe that's actually what we're for, aside from cataloging and janitorial duties.

[She's sort of sleeping. It's an uneasy thing, although she's been finding it easier since she got a purring blanket. Somehow. She's not going to question it.

But that purring's the only reason that when the ship goes still, she doesn't immediately jerk awake. It's a slower thing, a vague feeling of something wrong. She grew up on ships. Silence? It's bad. It's really bad.

Ratchet banging into the bed does a great job of waking her up the rest of the way, though.]

Hey-- What are you...

[And then Tali jerks up, and while it's dark, the only points of light are her eyes dimly creepily glowing. Just in time for the announcement.]

"Don't worry". [Enjoy that slightly panicky sarcasm there, Ratchet. It's just for you.]

[She's yawning widely as, while Ratchet fiddles with his MID, she clambers out of bed, shivering slightly. It's probably not cold by any reasonable person's standards, but someone's a little used to having lived her whole life in an environmental suit.]

Don't worry about it. [She waves a hand dismissively.] I was waking up anyway.

[She doesn't like being told to just hang tight and not worry, especially not with something as important as the ship keeping them alive in deep space.] The backup generators should be able to keep life support online until everything's fixed.

[She's fidgeting now, restlessly, tapping at her MID without actually doing anything and rocking on her heels.] I don't know if I should be down in Engineering or not. If the captains are handling this, I might just get in the way. [Too many cooks and all that. Also, despite herself, she's still a little used to the CDC method of, 'do only what we tell you, when we tell you'.]

[At his last words, she doesn't bother suppressing a snort.] You would think if we're useful enough to drag us in from a different universe, they'd trust us a little bit more. Or trust us at all.

[She plays with her hair absently, glancing up at the lights as if worried they're going to give out again.] I wonder if that's why they haven't called anybody to engineering. They don't want us dealing with whatever this is.

[Considering she's spent her whole life working on ships, that's an aggravating thought.]

Do you want to go to the observation deck? Maybe we can see whatever happened - if it was something external...? [Who even knows.]

[Jacky’s good at getting sleep while she can, and by now even the constant thrumming of the ship can’t keep her awake.

The sudden silence was enough to disrupt her rest, however, and the overhead announcement and Ratchet’s subsequent communique was enough to wake her the rest of the way.]

Is everything alright are we under attack is it all hands on deck?

[I said ‘awake’ not ‘overly coherent’; she’s ready to roll out of bed with her solitary remaining pistol if need be, but strenuous thinking is a bit beyond her at the moment.]

[personal profile] intherigging 2015-10-23 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. [Scrubbing her face, Jacky slid her pistol back under her pillow.] Roight as 'orses. Suppose power goin' out'sa bad thing? We been becalmed, or some such, eh?

[personal profile] intherigging 2015-10-23 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
[Ratchet can't see it, but Jacky's squinting at the cuff right now.]

Becalmed? S'what happens when the wind stops an' leaves y'stranded in the middle of the sea. Worst thing what can happen. Well. One'a th' worse.

[For how knowledgeable he was about space navigation and whatnot, he was as uninformed as any lubber; kinda disappointing.]
