[rey had never received a package before. suspicion had been her first response when she'd gotten the message on her MID. it had to have been some kind of trick. she's prepared for the absolute worst when she picks up the box, holding it as if it might detonate at any second.

inside was dosmit ræh's helmet.

her heart had constricted. ræh had been her imaginary friend as a child, and was still someone rey looked up to even though they'd never met. and since her helmet had been inside a wrecked ship, they probably never would. so having the helmet back was a gift she'd never dreamed of. but it also meant that someone had been in her home, in her private space. and that makes her furious.]

how do these packages get here? who retrieves them? i need to know

The packages come from the Ingress, just like we did, but there isn't any clear pattern or anything. Manasseh has a way to tell what world they came from and compares it to who is on the ship, and then the people responsible for delivering the packages take them to everyone's rooms. Or the cargo bay. Though one of my packages got sent to the medbay for some reason.

If you're wondering how the Ingress works, though, that's a lot more complicated. I don't think anyone on board has figured it out yet.

[Starflight did not want to think about how long he had been on the ship.]

It's really complex. I think it's fair to say even the engineers are used to different technology than whatever the Ingress uses, and some of us come from worlds with even more rudimentary technology. We don't have electricity or computers or anything like that where I'm from. Even my father's lab wasn't that advanced.

Personally my hypothesis is that it's a combination of advanced technology and animus magic.

Of course someone understands it, just no one on the ship. That's why we're trying to get to the people who made the Ingress in the first place. So they can help us fix it. And it's not like people haven't been trying. I've been writing down observations ever since we went to Cadacus Primary.

You can't exclude magic as a possibility. The NightWings have tunnels that are animus-touched and you can travel across the entire continent in seconds. The Ingress could do something like that on a larger scale.

[Starflight hesitates before answering, because there was a part of him that agreed with her. But he was so desperate to get home that he was happy to imagine any sort of mysterious savior showing up to solve their problem, even if he knew it probably wouldn't happen.

It's a very long time before the Rey gets a response.]

I don't know.

Ask the engineers.
