Moira crew,

In my new position as MID technician, I have added a couple of new apps and upgraded an existing app on your MIDs. They are as follows:

Map and Moira Positioning System (MPS)
This shows you a detailed layout of the ship, and you can use the MPS to give you a route to any navigational point on the ship you choose. You can also add notes to your map.

Medbay alerts
This feature will automatically send an alert to the medbay and navigation when your vital signs hit critical levels, with your name and position on the Moira, so that medbay technicians can find you and the captains are aware of your condition. If you are off the ship, the alert will give your distance from the ship and an approximate time it will take technicians to reach you. You will also receive a reply with an ETA for your recovery.

I thought with the life support still malfunctioning, it should be as easy as possible to find anyone in danger.

And speaking of being in danger, the upgrade is to the directory. In addition to the color coded basic life statuses, you can now enter short text updates of your condition for the rest of the crew to see, or, if you know the code used, program in automatic updates. I suggest you use this in crisis situations to let your friends and coworkers know how or where you are at a glance.

You will also notice a game named "Bonsai". This automatically installed when I pushed through the above updates; I did not make it. Do not ask me for technical support for it.

Nice work, Commander. [ Snake certainly didn't miss the usage of rank there. Just how many military trained personnel did the Moira house? ] It looks like the captains at least knew what they were doing in assigning your job.

Thanks. They didn't at first - my first job was in something I hadn't had experience with in years. I had to apply for this.

A few weeks after I arrived here, the captains posted job ads on the MID. I understand there's a Personnel Officer now, though.

Yeah, I think I met him, actually. I think I'll stick with the job I have for now, but I'll keep an eye out for those ads.

Here, nothing. [The MIDs?] Back home, Lieutenant Commander in the human Systems Alliance. I had my own warship, the Normandy.

Would that be the kind of ship that floats in water or flies in air or travels through space?

Space. Good call, clarifying.

And what kind of war were you fighting?

One against an ancient race of sentient machines trying to destroy all organic life.

[ Well then, that sounds pleasant. Why is it always machines? At least Snake had never been forced to deal with sentient ones, unless he counts the AI. ]

Who was winning?

[And that's a painful admission. Wasn't she raised as Shepard so she could do something about that?]

Why so interested?

I've participated in a few wars myself. Some of them even involved machines. Not any sentient ones, though.

[ It's more than he would usually reveal to a stranger, particularly over a phone line. But Snake always finds it easier to relate to other soldiers. ]

[A soldier. Part of her's thrilled. Most of her thinks he'll somehow realize she's not nearly as experienced as her stolen rank implies.]

You're lucky you weren't up against them.

Which branch are you with? Rank?

I used to be a part of the United States Special Forces, and then a black ops unit called FOXHOUND. These days I'm more freelance.

Don't really have a rank anymore.

I didn't even think they were supposed to come off the thing. They weren't on the tree back on Eta Ceta.

How? No one not from my universe knew it existed until it got sent to me here. Unless someone around here is into horrific genetic art just for the hell of it.

Good god, no. Barrayar would have cried mutation and burnt the thing before it even bloomed. ( they're very touchy about that sort of thing where he's from. ) I saw a larger version of it on Eta Ceta IV, which is an entirely different planet.

One in your universe, or one that the Moira has visited?

My universe. ( oh right he never really explained-- ) I've from Barrayar, it's one of three planets in the Barrayaran Empire: Barrayar, Komarr, and Sergyar. Eta Ceta IV is the capital planet of the Cetagandan Empire, which is about eight planets big -- they're constantly gunning for a ninth, you know, but haven't managed it. You'd think they'd stop trying after a while, actually, on account of the fact that we're not going to let them if we can help it. Point of pride.

Anyway. The Cetagandans like to screw around with genetics just to see what they can come up with. Art, that's what they call it. The tree's an example of that.

Maybe a Cetagandan was in the Moira's previous crew and left the code in.

It wasn't intended as social media! I was talking to the refugees and to Officer Vorpatril and it seemed like we could use an easy way to tell if someone was safe or not.
